The pitches will be filled to the brim with action at the St. Albert Rugby Football Club (SARFC) today, as all four of the club’s senior teams will be in action this afternoon.
First, the premier men’s side takes to Leading Edge Field against the Lep/Tigers in Alberta Cup action at 1 p.m. The defending provincial champions opened the season 0-3 but, bolstered by the return of several import players and players from injury, have bounced back with three straight wins leading into today’s matchup. The Lep/Tigers are also 3-3 on the season, but trail St. Albert in the standings.
At 3 p.m., it’s an Edmonton Rugby Union doubleheader, as the women’s second division team and the men’s third division squad take on opponents from Grande Prairie on adjacent fields. The women will look for their first win of the season when they square off against the Sirens, while men will look to improve their 2-4 record.
The Centaurs will also be the second division men’s opponents when they take to the pitch at 5 p.m. The seconds sport a record of 3-2, and recently bested the Centaurs (0-6) in a low-scoring 6-5 affair in Grande Prairie on Saturday, July 9.
Meanwhile, the rugby stars of tomorrow take to the SARFC pitches today during the club’s Mini Rugby Festival, which runs from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Teams will compete in five age categories: U7, U9, U11, U13 and U15.
Some of the best masters and senior tennis players in the province have converged on St. Albert this weekend.
The St. Albert Tennis Club is hosting the St. Albert Provincial Seniors/Masters Open Tournament, which kicked off Thursday and Friday nights. Play continues today and tomorrow at the club’s courts just off Mission Avenue.
Age categories range from 35-plus to 55-plus. Finals will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
The St. Albert Soccer Association (SASA) grounds in Riel Park continue to be a hub of activity this weekend as the first-ever Dieter Knobloch Memorial Adult Tournament carries on until Sunday afternoon.
The tournament — which used to be named the Big Rock Adult Tournament and was traditionally held in August — has attracted 26 teams across four divisions: women’s competitive/recreational, co-ed, men’s competitive and men’s competitive/recreational.
The tournament was renamed in honour of long-time SASA booster Dieter Knobloch, who passed away in June 2010 after a long battle with cancer. The tournament will feature a shooting station for players, with proceeds going toward the Cross Cancer Institute.
Finals are set for Sunday afternoon.
The St. Albert Impact Rangers are past the halfway point in their Edmonton and District Soccer Association men’s premier division season and hope to keep the momentum going Monday as they take on the KC Trojans at Riel Park at 7 p.m.
As of Wednesday, the St. Albert side was third with 17 points, while the Trojans are ninth with eight.
