Bitter rugby rivals St. Albert and the Clansmen duke it out today at Airway Park in the regular season finale.
The second division men’s match kicks off at 2 p.m. St. Albert (4-8-1) and the Clan (5-7-1) failed to make the playoff cut in the Edmonton Rugby Union.
The Alberta Cup premier men’s tilt scrums down at 4 p.m.
St. Albert (6-5) has lost four in a row and five of its last six matches to the Clan (7-4), including the 2012 Ken Ann Cup north final 61-15 and this year’s league opener 29-17.
St. Albert is playing its best rugby of the season as winners of three straight and four of its last five matches.
Depending on today’s outcome and the bonus point scenario, St. Albert is expected to play the Strathcona Druids (6-6) in next Saturday’s playoff at 2 p.m. at Ellerslie Rugby Park and the winner will challenge the Clan on Sept. 28 for the Ken Ann Cup and a berth at the Oct. 5 provincials.
The St. Albert Merchants make their Capital Junior B Hockey League debut this weekend under new head coach Scott Rodda with four pre-season games scheduled.
At the Morinville Jets’ exhibition tournament at the Ray McDonald Sports Center, the Merchants skate today at 2 p.m. against the Wetaskiwin Icemen and 6:30 p.m. against the Stony Plain Flyers and Sunday at 2:15 p.m.
At 7:30 p.m. Sunday the Merchants host the Spruce Grove Regals at Akinsdale Arena. The league opener for the Merchants is Sept. 20 against the Jets at 8 p.m. at Akinsdale.
Today in Tier 3/4 atom the Vikings play the Edmonton Seahawks at 8:30 a.m. at Clarke Park and the Buccaneers tackle the Stony Plain Bombers at 10 a.m. at Fuhr Sports Park in Spruce Grove.
Sunday in Tier 1/2 peewee at 12:30 p.m. the Riders (Tier 4 league finalists) line up against the Leduc Wildcats at Riel Recreation Park and the Colts (Tier 4 league champions and provincial silver medalists) battle the Edmonton Chargers at W.P. Wagner High School.
In bantam at Riel Park the Fury host the Leduc TiCats in Tier 1/2 at 10 a.m. Sunday and the 49ers (Tier 3 league champions and provincial north finalists) welcome the Millwoods Grizzlies in Tier 3/4 at 7 p.m. Monday.
