Slo-pitch at bat

Elite slo-pitch teams from across Alberta are converging on St. Albert this weekend for a provincial tournament.

Seven men’s teams and four women’s teams took over Meadowview Diamonds starting yesterday and will play through to the finals tomorrow afternoon.

The finals start at 1:30 p.m. for the men and 2 p.m. for the ladies.

Tigers clash

The claws will come out Tuesday evening as the two St. Albert Tigers squads in the Sunburst Baseball League square off at Legion Memorial Park.

The senior Black team is 5-8 on the year, taking one game out of four last weekend against teams from Red Deer. The junior Orange squad is 0-11, having dropped their latest contest 16-4 to the Fort Saskatchewan Athletics.

The first pitch is at 8 p.m.

Rugby in Grande Prairie

The St. Albert Rugby Football Club’s (SARFC) second and third division teams are hitting the road this weekend, as both are in Grande Prairie Saturday to take on the Centaurs.

The thirds take to the pitch at 12:30 p.m., while the second division squad kicks off their match at 4 p.m.

Meanwhile, the women’s second division team is at home this weekend taking on the Pirates at 1 p.m. at Leading Edge Field.

International visitors

SARFC will be home to a little international flavour on Wednesday, July 13, as the U18 Alberta provincial team squares off against a squad from Canford School in Dorset, England.

This is the first junior international match to be held at SARFC since 2009.

Kickoff is tentatively scheduled for 7 p.m., but could be moved up to 6 p.m. if conditions permit.

Miners dig in

It will be a battle of St. Albert on the lacrosse floor on Tuesday, July 12, as the junior A St. Albert Miners face off against their senior B counterparts in the Performance Arena at Servus Credit Union Place.

The junior squad took only one of a possible four points over the weekend in Calgary, tying the Calgary Jr. Mountaineers and losing to the Okotoks Jr. Raiders. That was followed up with a 10-7 loss to the Edmonton Eclipse Wednesday evening at Bill Hunter Arena.

Meanwhile, the senior Miners won both their games in Calgary last weekend, and have first place in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League squarely in their sights. They can take top spot away from the Okotoks Sr. Raiders with wins in their last two regular season games against the Jr. Miners and the last-place Spruce Grove Slash.

Faceoff is at 7 p.m.

Cards look to soar

The bantam AAA St. Albert Cardinals have a busy weekend ahead of them with a doubleheader in Lloydminster scheduled for 1 and 4 p.m. on Saturday, then back home to Legion Memorial Park for a twin bill against Spruce Grove at noon and 3 p.m. Sunday.

The bantams are coming off an 11-2 win over the Edmonton Cardinals on Wednesday night.
