The St. Albert Impact, a division 1B women’s team in the Edmonton District Soccer Association that will play in premier next year, are competing in Tier II. Nine players were also part of the U18 Impact provincial Tier II championship team this year.

Mavericks 09, the division one pennant winners in the St. Albert Women’s Soccer League, are kicking the ball in Tier III. Last year the Mavericks won bronze in Tier IV, matching the highest finish by a SAWSL team at provincials.

The Rummies and GSE are representing the St. Albert Men’s Soccer League in Tier III. Last year in Tier IV the Rummies won bronze for their 12th provincial medal in team history and GSE, the 2012 SAMSL playoff cup winners, finished 1-3.

The puck drops Sunday afternoon for the bantam AAA and midget AAA intersquad games at Akinsdale Arena.

The St. Albert Sabres skate at 12 p.m., followed the St. Albert Raiders at 2:30 and 5 p.m.

The Raiders make their pre-season debut in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League on Sept. 9 against the K of C Pats at 6:15 p.m. at Bill Hunter Arena.

The Sabres play their first exhibition in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League on Sept. 10 against the SSAC Southgate Lions at 6 p.m. at Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre.

Metro Edmonton high school football kicks off next week for the St. Albert High Skyhawks and Paul Kane Blues in the Miles conference and Bellerose Bulldogs in the Carr conference.

Wednesday the Skyhawks, last year’s Carr finalists and Tier III (450 to 749 students) provincial silver medallists, play the defending Miles champion Leduc Tigers at 5 p.m. at Johnny Bright Park.

Thursday at 7:30 p.m. the Blues huddle up against the W.P. Wagner Warriors, one of three Edmonton public league teams in the Miles, at Johnny Bright and the Bulldogs tackle Salisbury Sabres in Sherwood Park.

The online registration deadline for the 11th annual St. Albert Fall Challenge is Sept. 18 at 11:55 p.m.

Race distances on the Red Willow trail system include the 21.1-kilometre half-marathon run/walk (two laps on the trail), 10-km run/walk (one lap) and five km run/walk.
