The Bellerose Bulldogs host the Spruce Grove Panthers and Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds in Thursday’s high school football jamboree at Riel Recreation Park.

The controlled scrimmages run from 5 to 7 p.m.

Bellerose, Spruce Grove (2012 Edmonton public league champions and Tier I provincial silver medallists) and Ross Shep are competing in the revamped metro Edmonton league’s Carr conference.

League play kicks off next week.

Tryouts are underway for the St. Albert Sabres in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.

Sunday’s intersquad game starts at 12 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The new head coach is T.J. Woodward, an assistant coach for the bantam AAA Sherwood Park Flyers last season.

The first exhibition game is Sept. 10 against the SSAC Southgate Lions at 6 p.m. at Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre.

Last season the Sabres underwent a coaching shuffle after one of the worst starts in team history, en route to finishing out of the playoffs in the nitro north division at 9-16-8.

Tryouts start Friday afternoon for the St. Albert Raiders in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League.

Sunday’s intersquad games are 2:30 and 5 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The first exhibition game is Sept. 9 versus the K of C Pats at 6:15 p.m. at Bill Hunter Arena.

Sandro Pisani is back for another season as the Raiders’ bench boss and Umberto Fiorillo is the co-coach.

Last season the Raiders finished second in the north at 19-9-6 and in the playoffs lost the best-of-five semifinal in four games to the fourth-place Lloydminster Bobcats.

The first of nine tryout skates for the St. Albert Merchants in the Capital Junior B Hockey League goes Tuesday at 9:15 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The season opener is Sept. 20 against the rival Morinville Jets at 8 p.m. at Akinsdale.

The Merchants’ new head coach is Scott Rodda. The director of Family and Community Support Services for the City of St. Albert previously coached the Jets from 2008 to 2011.

Last season under head coach Clint Wandler the Merchants fell one win short of playing in the Founders Cup final and provincials during their deepest playoff run in years. In the deciding game in the best-of-seven semifinal the Merchants lost 3-2 to the Wetaskiwin Icemen at Akinsdale.

In league play the Merchants finished third at 22-12-4 in the west division.
