Today is a big day for St. Albert’s U17 juniors and premier men at Ellerslie Rugby Park.
At 2:15 p.m. the U17s and Druids-Lep/Tigers scrum down for the Ron Allen Cup in the Edmonton Rugby Union. It’s also the unofficial provincial final because there is no U17 division in the Calgary Rugby Union this year.
The U17s, last year’s ERU finalists and 2011 provincial finalists, are 9-0 and the Druid-Lep/Tigers are 5-4.
The 4 p.m. premier match between St. Albert (5-5) and the Strathcona Druids (6-5) is a preview of the Sept. 14 north semifinal. The winner battles the Clansmen (7-4) Sept. 28 in the Ken Ann Cup final to determine the ERU champion for the Oct. 5 provincials.
On June 1 the Druids defeated St. Albert 23-9 in Sherwood Park.
Last weekend’s 20-12 win over the Calgary Canucks (2-8) by the first 15 was their second in a row and third in four matches.
The big wheels on the national BMX circuit are competing at the Canadian BMX Championships and the BMX Canada Cup 3 series race this weekend at the St. Albert BMX facility at Riel Recreation Park.
Today’s opening ceremonies for the Canadian championships start at 11:15 a.m., and racing goes from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The awards ceremony is 5 p.m.
Sunday the Canada Cup race is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., followed by the awards presentation.

More than 40 St. Albert BMX riders are racing this weekend.
Tonight the St. Albert Heavenly Angels’ roller derby house teams wheel into action at Servus Credit Union Place.
The first jam whistle between Seraphim and Charlemagnes is 7 p.m. at the Pizza 73 fieldhouse.
Tickets are $15 at the door and children 10 and under get in free.
The Edmonton District Soccer Association’s premier promotion challenge involving the St. Albert Impact Rangers that was scheduled for Wednesday has been moved to Monday.
Kickoff between the Rangers and S.S. Lazio is 6:30 p.m. at the ESA Complex.
The winner will compete in the premier division next year.
The Rangers (9-4-1) finished second in division 1A and Lazio (4-10-3) placed eighth in premier.
Last week the Rangers beat the division 1B second-place St. Albert Impact team 2-1 for the right to play in the challenge match.
Last year the Rangers were relegated after posting a last-place 1-12-3 record in premier.
