Today’s doubleheader at the Leading Edge Physiotherapy Fields kicks off at 2 p.m. between St. Albert and the Leduc Crude, last year’s second division men’s provincial champions.
St. Albert, the Edmonton Rugby Union finalists the last three years, is 1-2. Leduc is 2-3.
At 4 p.m. is the rematch of the 2010 Labatt’s Cup premier final between St. Albert and the Calgary Canucks. St. Albert’s first 15 posted two wins in a row after starting the season with three losses. The Canucks are 4-1.
Last year’s 33-17 victory over the Canucks was the first premier men’s provincial championship in the history of the St. Albert Rugby Football Club.
Tonight’s Alberta Football League game between Edmonton Garrison Army and the Central Alberta Buccaneers of Lacombe is also a fundraiser for Cameron Brown.
Kickoff is at 8 p.m. at the Riel Park turf field. Admission is $5. Proceeds from gate receipts and the sale of $5 orange bracelets will be donated to the former St. Albert minor football player. His dad, Duane, is head coach of the Bucs and a former assistant coach with the St. Albert High Skyhawks.
In league play Garrison and the Bucs are 1-2.
The 2010 senior B provincial champion St. Albert Miners have home games scheduled this weekend at Performance Arena.
Tonight they host the Calgary Knights at 7 p.m. and the Calgary Mounties at 2 p.m. Sunday.
The Miners (6-4-1) are coming off a 12-6 decision against the Edmonton Outlaws last Saturday at Bill Hunter Arena. Not only did the result lift the Miners into second place, they also won the season series with the Outlaws. Period scores were 4-1 and 9-3. Graedon Cornfield’s hat trick and a pair by Kyle Schram paced the attack. The Miners struck five times on the power play. The teams combined for 110 penalty minutes. Owen Chatwin fought twice for the Miners and Aiden Inglis and Cornfield had one tilt apiece.
The Drive For Five is under way for the St. Albert Steel to sell 500 season tickets for the 2011/12 Alberta Junior Hockey League campaign.
Season ticket sales dropped from 454 in the Steel’s 2007/08 debut in St. Albert to 117 last season.
For less than $300, season ticket holders receive 30 home game tickets to use all at once or individually. Tickets are not dated.
