The next Alberta Football League game for the St. Albert Stars is Saturday against the Calgary Wolfpack.

Kickoff is 2 p.m. at Clarke Park.

The Stars are 1-1 in their inaugural AFL season after losing 22-11 to the Grande Prairie Drillers last Saturday on a muddy grass field in Grande Prairie.

Greg Germain’s 26-yard TD reception from quarterback Troy Pappas put the Stars on top early at 11-2.

Broken coverage allowed the Drillers to score a 60-yard catch-and-run TD before halftime to trail 11-9.

The third quarter was a defensive battle as both offences sputtered because of the field conditions.

With 10 minutes remaining, a combination of miscues and mental errors by the Stars on offence and defence allowed the Drillers to pull off a long drive, which lead to a TD and then a field goal in the final minutes.

The Stars also blocked two field goals in the loss.

“It was our game to win, we just beat ourselves with mental errors,” Pappas said. “We will have to regroup and fix it up at practice. We’ve got a two-game homestand to get back on track.”

The St. Albert Rugby Football Club will pound the pitch Saturday with four teams in action at Ellerslie Rugby Park.

At 12:30 p.m. the SARFC women tackle the Rockers (0-4) in the Edmonton Rugby Union’s first division spring league

SARFC was 0-3 going into tonight’s match against Crude/West (1-2) at 7 p.m. at Ellerslie.

The SARFC second division men scrum down at 2 p.m. against the Fort McMurray Knights (2-2).

The second 15s are coming off their second straight loss after two wins, 23-22 to the Pirates (1-4) last week.

The game of the week between the SARFC premier men and the Calgary Hornets (3-1) in the Alberta Cup fixtures kicks off at 4 p.m.

The first 15 are winless in five matches against the Hornets, the two-time defending Labatt’s Cup provincial champions.

The firsts are 2-3 after losing 40-25 to the Calgary Saints (4-1) last weekend in Calgary. At halftime the firsts led 25-19.

At 5:30 p.m. the U17 boys play the Edson Axemen.

The U17 season opener for SARFC goes tonight against the Strathcona Druids at 7 p.m. at Lynn Davies Rugby Park.
