The Dieter Knobloch Memorial Adult Tournament ends Sunday afternoon at Servus Credit Union Place.
The draw features two coed divisions of four (round robin) and six (two pools with crossover playoffs) teams, an eight-team women’s division (two pools with crossover playoffs) and a four-team classics division (round robin).
The tournament is held in honour of Dieter Knobloch, a life member and one of the founding members of the St. Albert Soccer Association who died in the summer of 2010 after a 10-year battle with cancer.
Knobloch served in a variety of capacities with SASA, ranging from president to facilities director. He was also a referee and head coach of the St. Albert Impact Rangers.
In 2011 the annual Big Rock adult outdoor tournament in August was renamed in Knobloch’s memory and this year it was changed to an indoor competition because of reclamation work and outdoor facility enhancement at the SASA fields at Riel Recreation Park.
The opening draw in the eight-team President’s Cup mixed playoffs is 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the St. Albert Curling Club.
The feature game is defending champion Doug McLennan (five President’s Cups in six years) versus Wilf Gunderson (2011 champion).
It’s McLennan’s last game before joining the provincial champion Wade White rink from St. Albert at the senior 50-plus nationals, starting next Saturday at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside, P.E.I.
The Alberta champions, with Dan Holowaychuk and George Parsons at front end, will join the Deb Santos rink of St. Albert at nationals. Santos’ provincial-winning line-up includes third Jackie Rae Greening, second Diana Backer and lead Glenna Rubin.
Filling in for McLennan in the mixed playoffs is Colin Jenkyns, the team’s second.
Last season McLennan’s rink of third Alison Howes, Jenkyns and his sister, Lauren, lost only one game when McLennan was vacationing in Arizona and Jenkyns was promoted to skip in a contest against Tony Germsheid.
The mixed A final is March 19 and the B final is March 21. Game times are 6:30 p.m.
The A-B final is March 22 at 7 p.m. If B beats A, the sudden-death match goes at 9:15 p.m.
The winner will represent St. Albert at the Edmonton and area Tournament of Champions, April 8 to 15 at the Saville Sports Centre.
