Today at noon the Wade White rink from the St. Albert Curling Club plays its first game at the senior 50-plus men’s provincial curling championship at the Granite.
White, third Doug McLennan, second Dan Holowaychuk and lead George Parsons curl against Brad Hannah in the opening draw at the eight-team competition.
White lost to Hannah 10-5 in the A qualifier at city zones and at the Northern Alberta Curling Association playdowns beat the Saville Sports Centre foursome 7-5 in the A semifinals.
White is the NACA A qualifier and Hannah, with locals Gary Greening and Don McKenzie in the line-up, is the NACA B qualifier.
The provincial eight-team senior women’s draw features rinks skipped by Cathy King, the defending Canadian champion, and the St. Albert rink of Deb Santos, Jackie-Rae Greening, Diana Backer and Glenna Rubin.
King and Santos go head-to-head today at noon.
The men’s and women’s semifinals are 7 p.m. Saturday, if no tiebreakers, or 9:30 a.m. Sunday. The final is 2 p.m. Sunday.
Nationals are March 16 to 24 in Summerside, P.E.I.

The fourth annual Family Day Classic, hosted by the St. Albert Soccer Association, kicks off Friday at 5 p.m. at Servus Credit Union Place.
The tournament features 47 teams in 10 divisions: U10 boys Tier IV/V, U10/12 boys Tier I, U10 girls Tier V, U12 girls Tier IV/V/VI, U14 boys Tier V, U14 girls Tier V, U16 boys Tier V, U16 girls Tier V, U16/18 girls Tier V and U18 girls Tier III.
SASA is represented by 24 teams.
Medal presentations are Sunday and Monday.

The Edmonton Oilers Alumni and Edmonton firefighters will play a charity hockey game Saturday in support of Muscular Dystrophy Canada.
Puck drop is 7 p.m. at Northstar Hyundai Arena.
General admission tickets are $20 through www.ticketweb.ca.
Doors open at 5 p.m., followed by a skate for the kids with the pros and firefighters.
The Oilers alumni team includes Brian Benning, Chris Joseph, Norm Lacombe, Dave Lumley, Fernando Pisani and others. Joseph is also an Edmonton firefighter.
Al Hamilton and Ron Low are the special guest coaches.
