The second annual Stadnyk Frozen Ring tournament is underway in St. Albert for 24 ringette teams in U10 novice and U12 petite.
Every team in the round robin plays two outdoor games at the Willoughby and Flagstone rinks and one game indoors at Servus Credit Union Place, Akinsdale, Kinex or the Canadian Athletic Club.
Sunday’s semifinals and finals will be held outdoors. The finals are 2 p.m. at Willoughby in U12 B, 2:30 p.m. at Flagstone in U10 and 3:30 p.m. at Willoughby in U12 A.
The Frozen Ring is named in honour of Glenn Stadnyk, the former longtime St. Albert Ringette Association president.
The tournament also features an exhibition game tonight at 7:45 p.m. at Willoughby between the University of Alberta ringette team, the two-time defending Canadian University Challenge Cup champions, and the St. Albert open (19-plus) STAB.
The last home game before the playoffs for the St. Albert Raiders is Sunday against the Calgary Royals in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League.
Puck drop is 3:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
Last weekend in Calgary the Raiders beat the Royals 5-1.
The Raiders (19-8-5) are one point behind the first-place Southside Athletic Club (19-6-6) in the north division with one less game played. The Royals (15-8-7) sit third in the south.
The 2012 provincial finalists close out the regular season next Saturday against the Oil Kings (16-11-5) in Leduc at 6 p.m.
The season ends this weekend for the St. Albert Sabres in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.
The Sabres (8-15-8) host the Canadian Athletic Club (12-15-5) today at 3:45 p.m. and the Grande Prairie Storm (4-24-3) Sunday at 11 a.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
The Sabres were eliminated from the playoff race in the nitro north division in Tuesday’s 2-2 draw against the Camrose Vikings (1-26-4) in St. Albert.
Entries are being accepted for the St. Albert Centre Ladies Bonspiel, Feb. 21 to 24 at the St. Albert Curling Club.

The winner of last year’s 18-rink bonspiel was the Shannon Germsheid team. In the final, Germsheid, Annette Mortensen (last rock thrower), Bean Nicol and Sharon Monk doubled Bev Merryweather 4-2 in seven ends.
