The annual Dynamyx Sweetheart Meet flips into action today at the Dynamyx Gymnastics Club in St. Albert.
The competition features 124 female gymnasts from 11 clubs. The Dynamyx club is represented by 25 gymnasts.
The first session starts at 8:30 a.m. for level 1 argo and tyro, followed at 12:30 p.m. by level 1 novice and level 2 argo, tyro and open and at 4:30 p.m. by level 2 novice and level 3 all ages. Each session lasts about three hours.
The St. Albert Slash have home ice advantage against the Lloydminster Steelers in the best-of-five north division semifinal in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League.
The Slash play host to the Steelers today at 2:15 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m. at Performance Arena.
Game three is March 2 in Lloydminster at 8 p.m.
If needed, game four is March 3 in Lloydminster and game five is March 4 at Performance Arena.
The series winner will play the 2011 champion Edmonton Thunder (24-5-3) or the Grande Prairie Storm (9-17-6) in the best-of-five north final.
In the division standings the Slash (20-7-5) finished second behind the Thunder, last year’s silver medallists at the Esso Cup nationals in St. Albert.
In league play the Slash beat the third-place Steelers (11-17-4) three times in four games.
The metro Edmonton high school basketball playoffs tip off Monday for St. Albert’s premier teams in the senior conferences.
In the women’s quarter-finals the first-place St. Albert Skyhawks (8-0) host the eighth-place St. Francis Xavier Rams (3-6) at 4:45 p.m. and the Paul Kane Blues play the Sturgeon Spirits in Namao at 5 p.m.
The Skyhawks are 24-5 overall as the No.1 ranked 3A team in Alberta. Paul Kane and Sturgeon shared fourth place at 5-4.
On the men’s side, in one quarter-final the first-place Blues (8-1) hoop it up against the eighth-place Leduc Tigers at 4:45 p.m. at Paul Kane. The Blues, last year’s premier champions, are 18-11 overall as the eighth-ranked 4A team in the province.
In another quarter-final at 4:45 p.m. the sixth-place Skyhawks (5-4) visit the third-place St. Francis Xavier Rams (7-2). The Skyhawks are ranked seventh in 3A and the Rams are listed ninth in 4A.
The men’s and women’s semifinals are Wednesday and the finals are next Saturday at O’Leary High School.
The Edmonton Speed Skating Association is hosting two sessions next week for the public to try out the sport during the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games.
They go Wednesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and Thursday from 6:45 to 7:15 p.m. at Troy Murray Arena. No registration is necessary. A hockey helmet and gloves are required. Speed skates will be provided.
