The St. Albert Blues host the Sherwood Park Oilers tonight in the Northern Alberta Midget AA Hockey League.
Game time is 8:30 p.m. at Performance Arena.
The Blues (15-3-4) and Oilers (11-9-2) are ranked first and third, respectively, in the central red division.
The Blues, 2011 playoff finalists and provincial silver medallists, are also tied with the Barrhead Steelers (16-5-2) for the most points in league play.
Friday in Barrhead forward Blair Macuch tallied twice, including the game winner, and added three assists as the Blues edged the Steelers 6-5. Cullen Moloy potted a pair and Barrett Belland and Jared Kwasney also scored against the top team in the west blue division. Shots were 35-23 for the Steelers. The winning netminder was Mitchel Vigneau.
The annual SAPEC junior high basketball tournament tips off Thursday at 4 p.m. in St. Albert.
The winning teams in the opening draw advance into the A division bracket and the losing teams compete in the B division playoffs.
The A finals are Saturday at 3:30 p.m. for the boys and 4:45 p.m. for the girls at Ecole Secondaire Saint Marguerite d’Youville (ESSMY).
Games are also scheduled at Lorne Akins, Vincent J. Maloney and Sir George Simpson during the three-day tournament.
Sixteen girls’ and 16 boys’ teams are entered. Local teams include the Elmer S. Gish Warriors, ESSMY Leopards, Lorne Akins Gators, Richard S. Fowler Falcons, Sir George Simpson Voyageurs, Vincent J. Maloney Marauders, William D. Cuts Crusaders, Morinville Wolves and Sturgeon Heights Eagles.
The defending champions are the lady Marauders and F.R. Haythorne Hawks of Sherwood Park for the boys.
The St. Albert Gymnastics Club hosts Winter Flip 2012 on Saturday at its Riel Park facility.
The annual women’s artistic invitation event will bring together 140 provincial level 1 to 4 gymnasts from Jasper, Edmonton, Fort Saskatchewan, Leduc, Spruce Grove, Wetaskiwin, Fort St. John, B.C. and the St. Albert Gymnastics Club and the Dynamyx Club of St. Albert.
Gymnasts will compete for medals in level 1 argo and novice at 8:30 a.m., level 1 tyro and level 2 argo, tyro and open at 12:30 p.m. and level 2 novice and level 3 and 4 all ages at 4:30 p.m.
