Sunday the St. Albert Merchants host the Spruce Grove Regals in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.

Puck drop is 8 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The Regals (24-6-3), last year’s playoff winners, are first in the west division and the Merchants (17-11-4) shared fourth place with the Morinville Jets (19-11) in the standings prior to Friday’s game against the last-place Stony Plain Flyers (2-29). The score was unavailable at press time.

The Merchants are 2-3-1 in January after Tuesday’s 3-0 road win against the Sherwood Park Knights (22-8-1). Mike Roeleveld, Stefan Meunier and A.J. Yariwon scored and Justin Pawlenchuk (13-9, 3.57 GAA) posted the team’s first shutout of the season.

The St. Albert Raiders play the top two south division teams this weekend in the Alberta Major Bantam Female Hockey League.

Today the Raiders (17-2-1) visit the Red Deer Chiefs (13-5-3) at 2:15 p.m. and Sunday they host Rocky Mountain House (17-2-1) at 1:30 p.m. at Northstar Hyundai Arena.

Earlier this month the Raiders lost 3-2 to Red Deer in St. Albert.

The Raiders are tied for second place in the north standings after losing 4-1 to the division-leading Lloydminster Ice Cats (11-7-2) last weekend in the Border City.

The Ice Cats scored two of their four goals in the second period on the power play. Kyrelle Skoye replied for the Raiders in the third.

The Raiders were outshot 39-22. In net was Hannah Clark (6-2-1, 1.67 GAA).

The Raiders are 1-2 in January after going 2-2 last month.

Tuesday’s bantam AA game between the St. Albert Blues and CAC Real Estate Weekly in the Edmonton rural league is also billed as a Hockey Fights Cancer fundraiser in support of people affected by the disease.

Faceoff between the Blues (19-8) and CAC (4-18-3) is 8:15 p.m. at Bill Hunter Arena.

Fans are encouraged to wear lavender or pink as a show of support for the fight against all forms of cancer.

All proceeds from the silent auction and 50/50 draw will be donated to the Cross Cancer Institute to help improve patient care and comfort.

Ribbons will be available and monetary and auction item donations will also be accepted.
