The St. Albert Merchants will be represented by seven players on the west division all-star teams at the Capital Junior B Hockey League’s showcase event today in Ardrossan. The rookie all-star game at 1:15 p.m.

The St. Albert Merchants will be represented by seven players on the west division all-star teams at the Capital Junior B Hockey League’s showcase event today in Ardrossan.

The rookie all-star game at 1:15 p.m. will feature defenceman Dan Rombough, forwards Jordan MacPhee and Casey Reid and netminder Max Cathcart.

Defenceman Brayden Switner, forward Alex Hawirko and netminder Justin Pawlenchuk will compete in the 4 p.m. all-star game.

Today the St. Albert Raiders play the Maple Leafs in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League.

Faceoff is 5:15 p.m. at Bill Hunter Arena.

The north division-leading Raiders (17-5-5) are 9-1-2 in their last 12 games as the No. 1 team in league play.

The Maple Leafs (6-15-5) are ranked eighth in the north.

The next home game for the Raiders is Wednesday against the Leduc Oil Kings (13-9-4) at 7:45 p.m.

The 2012 provincial finalists are 8-2-4 at Akinsdale Arena this season.

The John Reid Memorial Tournament skates into action Thursday at 8 a.m. at Servus Credit Union Place.

The 35th annual invitational tournament features 16 teams from across western Canada.

The John Reid conference consists of the St. Albert Gregg Distributor Sabres, Pursuit of Excellence Academy of Kelowna, Winnipeg Monarchs and Calgary Bisons in the Progressive Home Warranty division and the North Shore Winter Club Hawks of Vancouver, Lloydminster Heat, Calgary Royals and MLAC Scott Pump in the Skybox Grill division.

The Jarome Iginla conference includes the Burnaby Winter Club Bruins, Sherwood Park Flyers, Calgary Northstar Sabres and Winnipeg Hawks in the SVS Group LLP division and the SSAC Southgate Lions, Okanagan Hockey Academy, Notre Dame Hounds and Red Deer Rebels (Black) in the City Ford division.

Thursday’s opening ceremonies start at 7 p.m. at Northstar Hyundai Arena and the recipient of the fifth annual John Reid Society Scholarship will be announced.

The tournament was renamed in Reid’s memory in 2004.

The final is next Sunday at 2 p.m.

Entries are being accepted for the Solo Liquor Mixed Bonspiel, Jan. 23 to 27 at the St. Albert Curling Club.

The bonspiel also includes a beginner’s section.

The defending champion is the Dave Klatchuk rink of third Sharon Monk, second Bob Forbes and lead Janice Klatchuk. In the final Klatchuk defeated Warren Sadoway 5-3 in seven ends to finish 4-0 in the 21-team draw.

The 10-team beginner’s format saw Stacy Burzminski beat Grant Kolodychuk in the AA final.
