Sunday the St. Albert Merchants host the Wetaskiwin Icemen in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.
Faceoff is 8 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
The Merchants (13-6-2) and Wetaskiwin (13-9) are ranked second in their respective divisions.
The Merchants skated into Friday’s game against the defending league champion Spruce Grove Regals (18-2-3) undefeated in seven games. The score from Grant Fuhr Arena was unavailable at press time.
The St. Albert Raiders are on the road this weekend for games against south division teams.
Tonight the Raiders (12-4-4) play the Southeast Tigers (2-11-4) in Medicine Hat and Sunday afternoon they tangle with the Lethbridge Pronghorns (8-8-3).
The north division leaders are the No. 1 team in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League with 28 points, one more than the Red Deer Chiefs (11-2-5), the top team in the south. Red Deer has two games in hand on the Raiders, who are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games.
The next home game is Saturday against the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers (3-12-3) at 1:15 p.m. The Raiders are 6-2-3 at Akinsdale Arena.
Monday’s doubleheader at Paul Kane High School in metro Edmonton basketball tips off at 4:45 p.m. between the Blues and O’Leary Spartans in the premier men’s conference.
The Blues won Wednesday’s league opener 77-51 against the host Bellerose Bulldogs.
The two-time defending premier champions are 2-3 overall. Last weekend they finished eighth in the 16-team draw at the 15th annual Mike Dea Classic at the St. Francis Xavier Sports Centre. One of the losses was 92-68 to O’Leary.
In the 2012 premier final the Blues beat O’Leary 88-62 for their fourth premier title in six years.
At 6:15 p.m. the Blues host the Salisbury Sabres in premier women’s action. The Blues are 3-2 overall after starting league play with a 62-51 loss to the St. Francis Xavier Rams in Edmonton.
Last weekend at the 25th annual SAIT Silver Belle tournament in Calgary the Blues finished third at 2-1 in the platinum division.
The next game for the St. Albert Sabres is Tuesday against the Canadian Athletic Club in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.
Puck drop is 8:15 p.m. at Bill Hunter Arena.
The Sabres (3-12-4) and CAC (6-12-1) are the bottom two teams in the nitro north division.
The third loss in a row for the Sabres was 4-2 against the Oil Kings (7-8-3) in Leduc on Monday. Jack Langenhahn and Zach Nuttall scored and netminder Matt Murray stopped 39 shots.
Wednesday the Sabres host the Maple Leafs (11-4-2) at 7:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
