The St. Albert Skyhawks make their home debut today in metro Edmonton premier women’s high school basketball against the O’Leary Spartans.

The league opener for the three-time reigning 3A provincial gold medallists and 2012 premier champions starts at 4:45 p.m. at the SkyDome.

Last weekend the Skyhawks tipped off the season by winning the diamond division final at the 25th annual SAIT Silver Belle tournament in Calgary.

The Skyhawks beat a trio of 4A Calgary teams: Bishop Grandin Ghosts 68-17, Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs 71-37 and E.P. Scarlett Lancers 61-33.

Grade 11 forward Kayla Ivicak was the player of the game against the Ghosts with 24 points.

Grade 12 forward Paige Knull was the top Skyhawk against the Bulldogs with 20 points. Grade 10 forward Brielle Wise chipped in with 15.

Knull also drained 15 points in the final against the Lancers. Grade 10 forward Marinya Marcichiw tossed in 12 and Grade 12 guard Amber Easthope was named player of the game.

Friday the St. Albert Flyers faceoff against the Maple Leaf Athletic Club in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

Puck drop is 6:45 p.m. at Castledowns Arena.

The Flyers (6-3-4) were tied for second place in the north division going into Tuesday’s game against the SSAC Bulldogs (8-4-2), co-leaders with the Leduc Oil Kings (7-4-4). The score from Confederation Arena was unavailable at press time.

Last weekend the Flyers doubled the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers 6-3 at Akinsdale Arena.

Three goals by Ethan Lazaro, one goal and two assists by Thomas Friesen and Curtis Peck’s three assists paced the attack. Tristen Gavin and Liam Thomas also scored. Shots were 46-35 for the Flyers. In net was Tyler Boe (3-1-2, 2.84 GAA).

The St. Albert Lady Raiders skate twice this weekend on home ice in the Alberta Major Bantam Female Hockey League.

Saturday the Raiders (7-3-1) host the Calgary Outlaws (8-4-1) at 2:15 p.m. and Sunday they play the Grande Prairie Storm (0-8-2) at 11 a.m. at Northstar Hyundai Arena.

The Raiders are unbeaten in five games after going 4-2-1 in November.

Sunday the Morinville Jets and the Beverly Warriors hook up at 6:45 p.m. at the Ray McDonald Sports Centre in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.

The Jets (12-8) are three points back of the third-place Warriors (13-7-1) in the west division.

The Jets are coming off a big 2-1 overtime win against the first-place Spruce Grove Regals (18-2-3) Sunday at Grant Fuhr Arena. Nick Pratt opened the scoring on the power play and Wayne Gatza potted the game winner unassisted.
