The St Albert Slash skates twice this weekend in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League.
Today at 2:15 p.m. the Slash (9-6-2) host the Sherwood Park Fury (2-11-3) at Northstar Hyundai Arena.
Sunday the Slash plays the first-place Edmonton Thunder (12-2-2) at 4:30 p.m. at Millwoods Arena.
The Slash recently posted a 3-2 win over the Thunder, the reigning league champions and 2012 Esso Cup national bronze medallists.
Last weekend the Slash split a home-and-home series with the Lloydminster Steelers (5-8-5).
Deanna Morin scored twice and Ashley Morin had one goal and two assists in the 4-3 loss in Lloydminster. Andrea Dombowsky stopped 10 of 13 shots and Kaelin Klim gave up one goal on 20 shots.
In the next game Klim (5-5-2, 2.11 GAA) recorded 33 saves for the team’s first shutout of the season in the 2-0 win in St. Albert. Kate Lumley and Ashley Morin scored early in the third period in the penalty-filled affair.
The Olympian Swim Club hosts the second in a series of five swim meets today at Fountain Park Recreation Centre.
The 10-and-under event gives young swimmers a chance to experience a competitive meet environment in a low stress setting.
Swim clubs from Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove and Stony Plain will participate.
Warm-ups start at 1:45 p.m. and racing begins at 2:30 p.m.
Several St. Albert swimmers of all ages train with the Edmonton-based Olympian club.
The first tournament for the Paul Kane Blues is the 25th annual SAIT Silver Belle in Calgary.
Friday’s opening game is against Winston Churchill of Lethbridge.
The Blues tipped off the season in Tuesday’s 81-31 win over Scona in pre-season action at Paul Kane. They jumped out to a 28-6 lead in the first quarter and cruised to victory.
Grade 12 co-captains Josee Larson and Chantal Jouan led the Blues in scoring with 17 and 14 points, respectively. Sydney Hurlburt chipped in with 13 points, Tiana Woyewitka added 10 and Kaitlyn Hunder had nine.
The Blues have five players back from the team’s 6-5 record in the metro Edmonton premier conference. The Blues finished 12-8 overall in the regular season, won four out of six games in the league and zone playoffs and went 1-2 at the 4A provincials. They were seeded 10th in the 16-team draw as the Edmonton zone’s third rep at provincials.
The team’s new head coach is Karen Hurlburt, who guided the undefeated midget A female St. Albert SLAM to a provincial title last season.
The Blues start league play Dec. 3 against the Rams at St. Francis Xavier High School at 4:45 p.m.
