Today the St. Albert High Skyhawks and St. Paul Lions battle for a berth in the high school football Alberta Bowl.

The Tier III north final kicks off at 2:30 p.m. at Foote Field. Admission is $5.

The game was moved from St. Albert because of inadequate dressing room facilities at Riel Recreation Park.

The Lions (9-1), playoff winners in the Wheatland league, are ranked third and the Skyhawks (8-3), the Carr conference finalists in metro Edmonton, are ranked sixth.

The winner will challenge the No. 2-ranked Cochrane Cobras (10-1) or the No. 8-ranked Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs (3-5) of Lethbridge for the provincial title next Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Foote Field.

Last weekend the Skyhawks crushed the No. 7-ranked Peace River Pioneers (6-5) 49-28 in St. Albert and the Lions beat the No. 4-ranked Stettler Wildcats (8-1), last year’s provincial champions, 31-14 in Stettler.

The St. Albert Skyhawks host today’s crossover playoff round in the 3A women’s volleyball tournament, starting at 10 a.m. at the SkyDome.

The top three teams in both round robin pools compete for two berths at provincials next weekend in Camrose.

The semifinals are 12:15 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. and the final is 3 p.m.

The Skyhawks are seeded first in the eight-team draw.

In pool A action Friday the Skyhawks played the St. Peter the Apostle Spartans, the third-seeded Ardrossan Bisons and Louis St. Laurent Barons. Scores were unavailable at press time.

In the metro Edmonton premier conference the Skyhawks finished first in league play at 8-0, but in the semifinals lost 25-18, 18-25, 20-25, 25-22, 6-15 to Ardrossan in St. Albert.

The fifth annual Tier 4 peewee provincial football final kicks off today at 11 a.m. between the St. Albert Colts and Stettler Panthers at Johnny Bright Park.

Admission is $5.

The Colts (3-6) are the Tier 4 champions in the Capital District Minor Football Association.

In the north final the Panthers beat the Lloydminster Colts 26-12.

There is no Tier 4 peewee division in southern Alberta.

The St. Albert Slash and Lloydminster Steelers play a home-and-home series this weekend in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League.

The teams skate today in Lloydminster at 4:45 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Northstar Hyundai Arena.

Five points separate the third-place Slash (8-5-2) and fourth-place Steelers (4-7-5) in the north division.

The Slash are coming off a rare win over the first-place Edmonton Thunder (11-2-1) Monday in St. Albert. Deanna Morin, Kate Lumley and Ashley Morin scored and Kaelin Klim stopped 29 shots in the 3-2 decision.
