The Carr conference regular season in metro Edmonton high school football wraps up Thursday for the Paul Kane Blues, Bellerose Bulldogs and St. Albert High Skyhawks.
The results for Bellerose and the Skyhawks will determine Tuesday’s semifinal pairings at Clarke Park. The final is Nov. 3.
Admission is $5 for the following games.
PK vs. Bev Facey
Kickoff is 5 p.m. between Paul Kane (3-4) and the Bev Facey Falcons (7-0) at Riel Recreation Park.
Facey is ranked third in Tier I in Alberta. The 2011 Carr champions clinched first place last week by crushing Bellerose 44-0 in Sherwood Park.
Paul Kane snapped a two-game losing streak in the 51-13 blowout against the winless Archbishop Jordan Scots last week in St. Albert.
Going into the Scots’ game, quarterback Cory Knott and slotback Tyler Turner ranked as the most prolific offensive tandem in the conference. Turner was the runaway leader with 551 receiving yards on 25 catches. Knott passed for 1,051 yards, while going 56-for-110 for 10 touchdowns and six interceptions. Both players are in Grade 11.
Last year Paul Kane failed to win a game in the Carr in the first season of football in school history.
Bellerose vs. AOB
Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. between Bellerose (5-2) and the Austin O’Brien Crusaders (4-3) at Riel Recreation Park.
Bellerose is ranked 10th in Tier I and AOB is sixth in Tier II as the defending provincial champion.
A win would guarantee Bellerose either second or third place, setting up a historic semifinal showdown with the rival Skyhawks.
A loss could potentially set up a tiebreaker scenario involving Bellerose, AOB, the Skyhawks and Salisbury Sabres for second, third and fourth place.
Prior to the Facey game, Grade 12 tailback Ben Graunke was the top rusher in the conference with 1,090 yards on a league-high 125 carries.
Skyhawks vs. Scots
Kickoff is 5 p.m. between the Skyhawks (5-2) and the Scots (0-7) at Strathcona Athletic Park.
The Skyhawks, the only Tier III team in the Carr, can clinch second place with a win. Tie-breaking rules would possibly kick in if the 2011 provincial north finalists lose.
Grade 11 standout Keith Zyla is having an MVP season as the Skyhawks’ quarterback, safety and punter. In the latest conference stats, the backup quarterback with the 2010 Cooper City (Fla.) Cowboys was the top punter with 1,529 yards on 41 kicks, led the league in TD passes with 13 while going 47-for-85 passing with four interceptions, ranked third in rushing with 603 yards on 36 carries and was second on the team in tackles with 27.
Ranked sixth in Tier III, the Skyhawks kick off the provincial playoffs Nov. 10 in Edmonton.
