The second annual Battle of St. Albert between the Paul Kane Blues and St. Albert High Skyhawks in metro Edmonton high school football kicks off Thursday at 5 p.m. at Riel Recreation Park.
Admission is $5.
It’s a must-win game for both Carr conference teams, as only the top four in the nine-team standings make the playoffs.
The Skyhawks (3-2) and Blues (2-3) are coming off losses Friday after posting major victories earlier in the week.
The Skyhawks fell to 39-7 to the Salisbury Sabres (3-1), listed sixth in the Tier I Football Alberta rankings. The Skyhawks are No. 8 in Tier III.
The Blues gassed a second-half lead in the 41-30 setback to the Ardrossan Bisons (3-2), ranked No. 2 in Tier IV.
Last year the Skyhawks blanked the Blues 15-0 in the first gridiron clash between the two schools. With the formation of the metro association in 1988/89, Paul Kane students huddled up for the St. Albert Storm and then 13 years for the Skyhawks before the Blues made their senior team debut last year.
The 14th annual St. Albert Turkey Ring Tournament starts Friday morning with a record 71 teams in 11 divisions.
Teams will compete for medals in U9 bunny (St. Albert teams only), U10 novice, U12 petite A, B and C, U14 tween A and B, U16 junior A and B and U19 belle A and B.
The four-day schedule features 128 games at Servus Credit Union Place, the Akinsdale, Kinex and Canadian Athletic Club arenas and Riviere Qui Barre.

League play in SAPEC junior high volleyball starts Thursday afternoon with matches scheduled at seven St. Albert schools and in Morinville.
The defending Tier I city champions are the Lorne Akins Gators for the girls and the W.D. Cuts Crusaders for the boys.
Bragging rights are at stake Friday, when the St. Albert Merchants battle the Morinville Jets in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.
Game time is 8 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
Last season the Merchants beat the Jets three times in four meetings, but in the west division standings Morinville finished nine points ahead of St. Albert with five more wins.
Last weekend the Merchants (1-2) lost 3-2 to the Chiefs (3-1) in Beaumont and the Jets (3-1) posted road wins of 6-3 against the Fort Saskatchewan Hawks (2-2) and 8-5 against the Edmonton Mustangs (1-3).
Sunday the Merchants visit the Wetaskiwin Icemen (1-3) at 2 p.m. and the Jets host the Chiefs at 6:45 p.m. at the Ray McDonald Sports Centre.
