The ninth annual Ryan Burak Invitational Volleyball Tournament wraps up today at Paul Kane High School.
Round-robin pool play for the eight female and eight male high school junior teams resumes at 8 a.m.
The crossover playoff round starts at 12:30 p.m. The finals are 2:45 p.m. for the girls and 4 p.m. for the boys.
Local teams include the Paul Kane Blues’ boys and girls, Sturgeon Spirits’ boys and the lady St. Albert Skyhawks.
The tournament is held in memory of Ryan Burak, a Paul Kane graduate who played three years for the senior Blues’ volleyball team. He was killed by a drunk driver on Jan. 27, 2004 at the age of 20.
The Rummies and GSE will battle for playoff honours in the St. Albert Men’s Soccer League final Sunday.
Kickoff is 1 p.m. at Riel Recreation Park.
The Rummies are chasing after their 14th playoff cup in 18 trips to the final.
In semifinal action last weekend the Rummies (16-0-1) crushed Arsenal 7-1 and GSE (13-1-3) blanked Chester City 3-0.
In league play the teams played to a 1-1 draw in June and the Rummies won 3-0 in July.
Both teams received semifinal byes as the top two teams in the regular season.
At Tier IV provincials the Rummies won bronze and GSE finished 1-3.
The 2012 provincial finalists close out their exhibition schedule next week at Akinsdale Arena against the Southside Athletic Club on Wednesday at 7:45 p.m. and the Leduc Oil Kings on Saturday at 3:45 p.m.
The league opener for the Raiders is Sept. 29 against the Sherwood Park Kings at 1:15 p.m. at Akinsdale.
The bantam AAA pre-season ends this weekend for the St. Albert Sabres at the Terwillegar Arenas Fourplex.
Today the Sabres face-off against the Lloydminster Heat and Sunday they play the Sherwood Park Flyers. Game times are 10:30 a.m.
The regular season starts Sept. 26 for the Sabres against the Leduc Oil Kings at 7:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
This weekend the St. Albert Slash have games scheduled in Red Deer and Calgary as the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League begins its 10th season.
The Slash play the Red Deer Rebels today at 5 p.m. and the Calgary Flyers on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
The Slash make their home debut next Saturday against the Grande Prairie Storm at 6:15 p.m. at Northstar Hyundai Arena.
