The north semifinal between St. Albert and the Strathcona Druids in Alberta Cup men’s rugby kicks off today (Saturday) at 4 p.m. at Ellerslie Rugby Park.
St. Albert and the Druids posted identical 5-7 records while splitting the season series at two wins apiece.
St. Albert’s first 15 are winless in four matches in their quest for a fifth straight trip to the provincial final and the first Labatt’s Cup championship since 2010.
The playoff winner will challenge the Clansmen (8-4) in the Sept. 22 north final at Ellerslie.
The provincial final is Sept. 29 at Calgary Rugby Park.
Sunday’s divisional finals in the St. Albert Women’s Soccer League start at 5 p.m. at Eldorado field.
Mavericks 09 (15-0) and the Morinville Ladies (12-4) battle for the division one playoff cup.
The Mavericks are coming off a bronze-medal winning performance at the Tier IV provincials.
SA Force (15-0-1) and the Snipe (8-6) compete for division two honours.
Sunday’s semifinals in the St. Albert Men’s Soccer League features the top two teams in the regular season.
At Eldorado field the Rummies (15-0-1) will play the group B playoff winner at 11 a.m. and GSE (12-1-3) squares off against Chester City, the group A playoff winner, at 1 p.m.
The Rummies and GSE received semifinal byes and the seven other teams competed in the round robin playoffs.
At Tier IV provincials the Rummies won bronze and GSE finished 1-3.
The SAMSL final is Sept. 16 at 1 p.m. at the Riel turf field.
The puck drops Monday for the St. Albert Raiders in midget AAA pre-season action.
The 2012 provincial finalists host the Canadian Athletic Club at 8:15 p.m. at Mark Messier Arena.
Wednesday the Raiders play the Maple Leafs at 8:15 p.m. at Troy Murray Arena.
The metro Edmonton junior football season starts Tuesday for St. Albert’s high school teams.
At Strathcona Athletic Park the Paul Kane Blues and the Bev Facey Falcons clash at 5 p.m. and the Bellerose Bulldogs huddle up against the Salisbury Sabres at 7:30 p.m.
Last year the Blues beat the Falcons in the premier conference final. It was the first football championship in Paul Kane history.
The Bulldogs lost the premier semifinal to the Falcons.
The St. Albert Hawks make their season debut against the St. Joseph Saints at 7:30 p.m. at Clarke Park.
Last year the Hawks were outscored 187-12 in four losses.
In the nine-team junior league the top four advance to the premier semifinals and the next four teams compete in the city conference playoffs.
