The puck drops today at the sixth annual Edmonton Oil Kings’ pre-season invitational tournament at Northstar Hyundai Arena.
The 2012 Western Hockey League champions skate tonight against the Swift Current Broncos and Sunday against the Red Deer Rebels at 7 p.m.
The tournament opens today at 11 a.m., with Red Deer playing the Prince George Cougars. At 3 p.m. the Medicine Hat Tigers battle the Calgary Hitmen.
Sunday at 11 a.m. it’s Prince George versus Medicine Hat, followed by Swift Current against Calgary at 3 p.m.
Tickets are $10 per game or $25 for a day pass. General admission tickets are available at the door.
The bantam AAA Sabres and midget AAA Raiders have intersquad games scheduled this weekend at Akinsdale Arena.
The Sabres rattle the ice today at 2 p.m. and the Raiders’ blue versus white games are Sunday at 4:30 and 7 p.m.
The Sabres make their exhibition debut Friday against the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers at 6 p.m. at Akinsdale.
The Raiders start their pre-season Sept. 10 against the Canadian Athletic Club at 8:15 p.m. at Mark Messier Arena.
The St. Albert Minor Football Association, with the cooperation of the City of St. Albert, celebrates 50 years of football in St. Albert next Saturday.
The theme is SAMFA’s Got Talent.
SAMFA invites former St. Albert minor football coaches, board members, volunteers and players to join current SAMFA personnel at the festivities.
The Capital District Minor Football Association is expected to schedule its season-opening games at Riel Recreation Park for the SAMFA teams in atom (Buccaneers against Vikings), peewee (Colts against Riders) and bantam (Fury against 49ers).
At 12 p.m. the national anthem will be sung, Mayor Nolan Crouse will deliver a short speech, the anniversary cake will be cut and the SAMFA players will join together in a commemorative photo celebrating the 50th anniversary.
A free hot dog lunch for players and spectators goes from 12 to 2 p.m.
Raffles, 50/50 draws and a jumpy castle and obstacle course are also on tap.
In the evening SAMFA is hosting a fun pub night for adults at the Skybox Grill in Servus Credit Union Place, featuring live music, karaoke competition and a silent auction.

Celebrity guests are also expected to make an appearance at Riel Recreation Park and the Skybox Grill.
