Knobloch tourney

The second annual Dieter Knobloch Memorial Adult Tournament is taking place this weekend at the St. Albert Soccer Association (SASA) grounds in Riel Park.

This year, the tournament features 22 teams playing in one men’s, one co-ed and two women’s divisions.

The former Big Rock Adult Tournament was renamed last year in honour of long-time SASA booster Dieter Knobloch, who passed away in June 2010 after a long battle with cancer.

The tournament finals are set for Sunday afternoon.

St. Albert Rugby

On Saturday at 2 p.m. the St. Albert third division men host the Grande Prairie Centaurs at Leading Edge Fields and later that afternoon, the Alberta Cup premier men play the 2012 provincial champion Calgary Hornets at 3:30 p.m. at Calgary Rugby Park.

On Monday the St. Albert Rugby Football Club U18’s will play host to an international team taking on the Audenshaw U18’s from England. Kick-off is 5:30 p.m. at SARFC.

Senior B Miners playoffs

The reigning provincial champion senior B Miners begin their run for a third-straight Alberta title when they play their first games in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League (RMLL) playoffs this weekend. The Miners were hoping to meet rival Slash in the playoffs and St. Albert will get their chance to take on Spruce Grove in the first round in what is sure to be two highly competitive contests.

The Miners’ games will take place on Saturday and Sunday night. Both match-ups begin at 7:30 p.m. at Grant Fuhr Arena in Spruce Grove.

St. Albert finished the regular season sitting at third in the RMLL rankings, one spot below the second-ranked Slash. The Miners won three of their five games versus the Slash during the regular season.

The 2012 playoff schedule for the Albert Junior A Lacrosse League was not available at press time.

Cardinals baseball

The bantam AAA Cardinals travel to Spruce Grove for a double dip on Saturday against the White Sox before closing out the season against Okotoks Red. The final home game of the Redbirds’ regular season goes Sunday at noon at Legion Memorial Park.
