The main event at today’s rugby tripleheader in Sherwood Park is the Alberta Cup opener between St. Albert and the Strathcona Druids.
Kickoff is 4 p.m. at Lynn Davis Rugby Park.
Last year St. Albert’s premier men (11-4) dropped three straight to start the season, then won 11 in a row before losing their third Labatt’s Cup provincial final in four years under head coach Chal Smyth. The 31-13 loss to the Calgary Hornets in the provincial showdown was only the 10th defeat in 61 matches by the first 15 during Smyth’s stint at the St. Albert Rugby Football Club.
Smyth is now coaching the Druids, his former club.
St. Albert teams in the Edmonton Rugby Union also scrum down today in Sherwood Park at 12:30 p.m. against the Druids Red (1-0) in the women’s spring league and 2:15 p.m. against the Druids (1-0) in the men’s second division.
Last weekend the women lost 48-3 to the Rockers and the seconds fell 29-12 to the Nor’Westers.
The St. Albert Cardinals have home field advantage this weekend against the Okotoks Dawgs White in the Norwest Midget AAA Baseball League.
The teams play today at 1 and 7 p.m. and Sunday’s start times are noon and 3 p.m. at Legion Memorial Park.
The Cardinals are 1-4 in league play and 1-6 overall this season.
The St. Albert Women’s Soccer League schedule kicks off Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Forest Park field.
The Mavericks 09 and the Lady Titans meet in division one and the Devils and Snipe clash in division two.
The top six division one teams from last year will play a triple round robin for a spot at the Tier IV provincials.
Eight teams in division two will compete in a double round-robin format.
