The Alberta Cup tournament starts Thursday in Lethbridge for the St. Albert-dominated Northwest Sharks.
Netminder Pat Dea, defencemen Brendan Kallis, Mark Matsuba and Dylan Overdyk, forwards Thomas Friesen, Matteo Gennaro, Ethan Lazaro, Curtis Peck and Joshua Perrott played for the St. Albert Sabres last season in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League. Dea was also honoured as the top netminder in the league’s north conference.
Eight zone teams are competing in the four-day tournament. Last year the Sharks lost the A final 3-2 in a shootout to the Calgary South Flames with nine St. Albert players in the line-up.
The Alberta Cup is also heavily scouted by Western Hockey League teams in preparation for the May 3 bantam draft.
The St. Albert Arch Angels roll into Calgary on Saturday for a bout with the Thrashin’ Lassies.
The first jam whistle goes at 5 p.m. at the Triwood Community Association.
The inaugural travelling team for the St. Albert Heavenly Rollers is 1-1 this season.
The next home bout for the Angels is May 26 against the Grande Prairie Roller Derby Association at Servus Credit Union Place.
In last season’s debut the Heavenly Rollers won five and lost four while going 3-2 on their home track.
The selection meet for the Zone 4, 5 and 6 track and field teams for the Alberta Summer Games is May 26 at Fowler Athletic Park.
The registration deadline is May 18 for U15 midget and U17 youth athletes.
St. Albert is part of Zone 5 Black Gold/Yellowhead.
The Games start July 26 in Lethbridge.
June 3 is the deadline to register for the 21st annual St. Albert Kids of Steel Triathlon at the Fountain Park Recreation Centre.
Youths between four and 19 years old can participate in the June 10 triathlon as an individual or as a team on a swim-bike-run course that varies in distance according to age group.
The Alberta Summer Games qualifier for Zones 5 and 6 is also a competition for junior elite and U23 athletes. The junior triathlon is a bike draft legal race for athletes 16 to 19 and the U23 event is for athletes up to age 23. Distances are a 750-metre swim, 18.4-km bike and five-km run.
Last year 290 youths, 23 elite juniors and 13 teams finished the race.
