The President’s Cup finals in the men’s and women’s playoffs at the St. Albert Curling Club slide into action Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

The tiebreakers in the double knockout format go Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Eight men’s rinks and six women’s rinks qualified for the playoffs.

The winners will represent St. Albert at the Edmonton and area Tournament of Champions, starting April 10 at the Jasper Place Curling Club.

The Manager’s Cup men’s and women’s playoffs also wind up Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

The St. Albert Storm kicks off its midget spring league season in the Capital District Minor Football Association at Saturday’s jamboree in Spruce Grove.

The Storm huddles up at 10:30 a.m. against the Edmonton Mustangs, 11:30 a.m. against the Edmonton Chargers, 12:30 p.m. against the Battle River Shock and 1:30 p.m. against the Lloydminster Red Dogs at the Fuhr Centre Football Fields.

The controlled scrimmages consist of 18 offensive plays per game, starting from the 35-yard line going in. There is no blitzing, with a maximum of seven players in the box on defence.

The Storm’s 47-player roster of Grade 9, 10 and 11 players features four sets of brothers: Dallas and Tyler Moroz, Nathan and Connor Pytel, Ryan and Dylan Shorten and Billy and Michael Clapp.

Because of spring break, only about 30 players will dress for the jamboree.

League play for the Storm in the Tier I and II divisions is expected to start next week.

The Storm’s new head coach is Leonard McCoshen. The field general for the 2011 peewee St. Albert Riders takes over from Chad Hill. Last year Hill guided the Storm to a third-place 1-3-1 record in league play. In the playoffs the Storm lost the Tier II final 22-9 to the Parkland Predators after leading 9-7 at halftime.

In 2010 the Storm won the Tier II final after capturing the Tier III championship in 2009.
