The Paul Kane Blues host the Archbishop Jordan Scots in today’s metro Edmonton basketball doubleheader at Paul Kane High School.
The premier men’s match tips off at 4:45 p.m. between the Blues (7-1) and the winless Scots. A victory would clinch first place for the Blues. The 2011 premier champions are 17-11 overall as the eighth-ranked 4A team in Alberta.
The premier women’s game goes at 6:15 p.m. In the 4A rankings the Scots (7-1) are listed fifth and the Blues (5-3) are not ranked.
The men’s and women’s premier playoffs start Feb. 27. The finals are March 3 at O’Leary High School.
The St. Albert Flyers skate into tonight’s home game against the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers undefeated in 13 games in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.
Puck drop is 7:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
The Flyers (22-5-6) maintained their first-place standing in the north conference with Friday’s 3-0 win over the Maple Leafs at Castledowns Arena.
Pat Gora (10-2-4, 1.96 GAA) stopped 26 shots for his conference-leading third shutout.
Affiliate player Brodie Blinston opened the scoring and Steven Canduro and Brenden Passek notched power-play goals.
The Lloydminster Rage (23-6-3) trail the Flyers by one point with a game in hand.
The last game before the playoffs is Sunday against the Oil Kings in Leduc at 4 p.m.
Meanwhile, Paul Lovsin is the top scorer in the conference with 35 goals and 69 points in 31 games. In second spot is Brett Smythe with 27 goals and 60 points in 29 games.
The St. Albert Slash open their best-of-five Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League playoff series against the Lloydminster Steelers this weekend at Performance Arena.
The north division semifinal starts Saturday at 2:15 p.m. Game two is Sunday at 11 a.m.
In the opening round the Steelers defeated the Sherwood Park Fury in three games and the Slash had a bye.
In the north standings the Slash (20-7-5) finished second and the Steelers (11-17-4) placed third.
The St. Albert Minor Football Association’s pre-season boot camp for peewee and bantam players kicks off next week at St. Albert Catholic High School.
The Monday and Wednesday sessions start at 6:30 p.m. and last one hour.
The eight-week program ends April 30.
The boot camp is designed to help the players prepare for the upcoming season, as well as improve their conditioning for other sports and every day life. Emphasis is on speed and power training.
