The host team for the Edmonton zone high school cheerleading championships will open the competition Friday at 7:15 p.m. at Bellerose Composite High School.
The Bellerose Bulldogs will perform in the co-ed division against the Austin O’Brien Crusaders, Eastglen Blue Devils and Victoria Redmen.
In the large squad division are the O’Leary Spartans, Harry Ainlay Titans, Lillian Osborne Legends and Salisbury Sabres.
The small squad division includes the Oscar Romero Ravens, Austin O’Brien, Bev Facey Falcons, Jasper Place Rebels, McNally Tigers, Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds, St. Francis Xavier Rams, Strathcona Lords and W.P. Wagner Warriors.
The awards ceremonies start at 9 p.m.
Admission is $5.
The winners advance to the March 2-3 provincials in Brooks.
Meanwhile, four junior high cheer teams from St. Albert will showcase their skills at zones. The exhibition times are 8:35 p.m. for Elmer S. Gish, 8:45 p.m. for Ecole Secondaire Saint Marguerite d’Youville, 8:50 p.m. for Sir George Simpson and 8:55 p.m. for William D. Cuts.
The third annual Family Day Classic, hosted by the St. Albert Soccer Association, kicks off Friday at 5 p.m. at Servus Credit Union Place.
The tournament draw consists of 45 teams in eight divisions: U10 boys and girls community, U12 boys and girls, U14 boys and girls, U16 girls and U18 girls.
St. Albert is represented by 22 teams.
The medal presentations are Monday.

The playoffs are underway for the St. Albert Sabres in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.
Game one in the best-of-three north conference quarter-finals between the Sabres and the SSAC Southgate Lions was played Tuesday at Coronation Arena and the score was unavailable at press time.
Game two is Saturday at 3:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
Game three, if needed, goes Sunday at 4 p.m. at the George S. Hughes South Side Arena.
In the nitro division the Lions (26-4-3) finished first and the Sabres (18-8-7) placed fourth.
The series winner will play the second-place Sherwood Park Flyers (24-6-3) or the third-place CAC Canadians (21-9-9-3) in the best-of-three north semifinal.
The Sabres skated into the playoffs with record of 1-4-1 in their last six games after losing four in a row at the John Reid Memorial Tournament.
The Sabres also finished 2-2-1 against the second-best team in league play after they were mauled 10-0 by the Lions on Sunday at Millwoods Arena. The Lions scored twice in the first and five times in the second.
The night before the Sabres dropped a 7-2 decision to the Canadians at Coronation Arena.
