The St. Albert Flyers host two games at Akinsdale Arena this weekend as the pennant race heats up in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.
The third-place Flyers (16-5-5) play the first-place Lloydminster Rage (19-4-2) Saturday and the second-place Spruce Grove Saints (17-6-4) Sunday. Game times are 1:15 p.m. Three points separate the top three teams in the north conference.
The Flyers are undefeated in six games after their 6-1 win over the Sherwood Park Squires (6-15-7) last weekend in St. Albert. Paul Lovsin tallied twice and had one assist. Tyler Lotoski, Andrew Kary, Brett Smythe and Steven Canduro also scored and Pat Gora stopped 33 shots.
The next home game for the St. Albert Merchants is Sunday against the Beaumont Chiefs at 8 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
In the Capital Junior B Hockey League the Merchants (16-12-4) sit fourth in the west division and the Chiefs (25-7) are second in the east standings
The Merchants travelled to Leduc to play the Riggers (7-20-6) on Friday, but the score was unavailable at press time.
Last weekend the Merchants ended a three-game losing streak with an 8-2 win over the Stony Plain Flyers (1-29-3) in St. Albert. Alex Hawirko was the top scorer with three goals. His 29 points in 33 games leads the team.
Metro Edmonton high school basketball resumes Wednesday after the exam break for the provincially ranked St. Albert Skyhawks and the Paul Kane Blues.
In the premier women’s conference the Skyhawks play the O’Leary Spartans at 6:15 p.m. at O’Leary High School.
The Skyhawks are 4-0 in premier and 11-4 overall. The two-time defending provincial champions are the No. 1 ranked 3A team in Alberta. The Spartans (3-0) are ranked eighth in 4A.
In premier men’s action the Skyhawks (3-1) and the Spartans (4-0) hook up at 4:45 p.m. The Skyhawks are ranked seventh in 3A and the Spartans are an honourable mention in 4A.
The doubleheader between the Blues and the St. Francis Xavier Rams at Paul Kane High School starts with the premier men’s match at 4:45 p.m.
The Blues are 3-1 in league play and 9-6 overall as the defending premier champions. In the 4A rankings the Rams (2-0) are listed second and the Blues are an honourable mention.
The premier women’s game tips off at 6:15 p.m. In 4A the Blues (1-2) are an honourable mention and the Rams (1-2) are unranked.
