Last weekend on the road the Steel picked up one point in three games against south division teams. They lost 4-3 in a shootout against the Brooks Bandits (36-7-6), 4-0 against the Drumheller Dragons (13-33-3) and 8-2 against the Calgary Mustangs (25-18-4).

Steel netminder Rhys Hadfield was credited with 50 saves Friday in Brooks. Jamie Johnson tallied twice and Bryce Sauers also scored as the Steel registered 15 shots. The Steel led 1-0 after the first and 3-2 after the second. In the shootout Brooks scored three times and Dallas Smith replied for the visitors.

Saturday in Drumheller the Steel were outshot 16-2 in the third and 40-15 overall. In net was Hadfield (3-22-1, 4.83 GAA).

Sunday the Mustangs lit up netminder Tanner Kovacs (1-7, 5.33 GAA) for eight unanswered goals after Brady Goebel opened the scoring in the first. Steel rookie Andrew Gillespie converted a penalty shot in the third. Shots were 57-24 for the home team.

The Steel are winless in seven games after their 24th loss in 26 games.

The opening draw in the Mission Liquor Mart Mixed Bonspiel starts Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the St. Albert Curling Club.

The last mixed bonspiel in St. Albert was held in October 2009 with 16 teams entered. Wilf Gunderson’s rink of Shelley Williams, Dan Magotiaux and Marlis Gunderson repeated as the A event winners. The 2011 St. Albert club champions curl in the Friday night mixed league.

The St. Albert Slash have home-ice advantage this weekend at Performance Arena in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League.

Saturday at 2:15 p.m. the Slash (16-6-4) renew their rivalry with the defending champion Edmonton Thunder (20-3-2). Sunday’s game against the Sherwood Park Fury (5-18-2) starts at 11 a.m.

Last weekend in Grande Prairie the Slash defeated the Storm (6-16-4) by scores of 3-2 and 2-0. Jessica Kampjes notched goals in both wins and Emily Mitchell faced 26 shots while posting her second shutout of the season.
