The St. Albert Mustangs will be out in full force at the Alberta Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend at the Butterdome.
The Mustangs achieved personal bests and top honours at meets leading up to provincials.
Athletes to watch include the following Mustangs:
Madelyn Curle: senior women’s high jump.
Jace Mix: senior men’s high jump.
Talitha Collin: junior women’s weight throw.
Lewis Collin: youth men’s pentathlon.
Jakob Brinkhof: youth men’s shot put.
Brady Galvin: midget men’s pentathlon.
Catharine Kluyts: youth women’s 60m.
Ava Weeks: peewee girls’ 60m.
Mathieu Morin: peewee boys’ 60m.
Youth men’s 4x200m relay team: Lewis Collin, Ryder Horton, Emmett Clarkin and Mix.
Today at 5 p.m. the St. Albert Slash visit the Sherwood Park Fury in game two in the best-of-five Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League playoffs.
Game three is 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Go Auto Arena.
The Fury won the series opener 4-3 Tuesday in Sherwood Park.
The teams combined for five power-play goals and Rachel Rochat, Jenna Jewell and Breanna Jones struck with the man advantage. The Slash trailed by two when Jones scored with 1:42 left in regulation time.
Shots were 28-18 for the Fury and Erynn Shantz was in net.
If needed, game four is 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Go Auto Arena and game five is March 15 at 1 p.m. in Sherwood Park.
The winner advances to the March 19 to 22 provincial tournament at Spruce Grove.
Two points separated the fourth-place Fury (17-12-3) and fifth-place Slash (15-12-5) in the standings.
In league play the Fury beat the Slash 3-1, 1-0 and 4-3 before losing 4-3 in St. Albert on Jan. 30.
The SAPEC Tier I junior high city basketball finals have been rescheduled for Wednesday at the SkyDome.
The girls start at 5 p.m. and the boys play at 6:30 p.m.
The Tier I semifinals tip-off Monday.
In the girls’ bracket at 4 p.m. the No. 1 ESSMY Leopards (7-1) host the No. 4 Morinville Wolves (5-3) and the No. 2 Lorne Akins Gators (7-1) entertain the No. 3 Vincent J. Maloney Marauders (6-2), last year’s champions.
The boys’ bracket features the No. 1 Richard S. Fowler Falcons (8-0) at home against ESSMY (5-3) at 4 p.m. and the No. 3 Sir George Simpson Voyageurs (6-2) visit the No. 2 Gators (7-1) at 5:30 p.m.
