The Tim Hortons Brier starts today in Calgary for St. Albert curlers Marc Kennedy and Jamie King on Team Alberta.
Kennedy is the third and King is the alternate for the Kevin Koe rink.
Brent Laing and Ben Hebert also curl for the Glencoe Club foursome of Calgary.
The World Curling Tour team is ranked fourth in the order of merit standings and fifth on the money list at $60,201.
This is Kennedy’s sixth Brier and his first since 2013. As the second for the Kevin Martin rink he was the first team all-star selection in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011 and was a second-team all-star in 2013.
King, 41, is making his third Brier appearance as the alternate for Koe, the 2010 and 2014 champion. The 10-time President’s Cup playoff champion at the St. Albert Curling Club and three-time Edmonton and Area Tournament of Champions winner attended worlds both years, highlighted by Koe’s victory in 2010.
Kennedy, 33, is a two-time Brier winner, 2008 world champion and 2010 Olympic gold medallist with Martin, John Morris and Hebert.
This is the first season for the Koe-Kennedy-Laing-Hebert combination, winners of a combined eight Briers, five world championships and two Olympic gold medals.
Kennedy also sweeps the skip’s rocks with Laing holding the broom.
Alberta’s first game is 6:30 p.m. tonight against Jim Cotter of British Columbia.
The highly-anticipated showdown between Alberta and Team Canada, with Morris skipping Koe’s former team of Pat Simmons, Carter Rycroft and Nolan Thiessen, is 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
