Women’s rugby
Tonight’s division two women’s match kicks off at 7 p.m. between the host St. Albert Rugby Football Club and Nor’Westers.
In round two of the Edmonton Rugby Union fixtures, the lone result for SARFC was 34-29 over the LA Crude (2-1) July 10 in Leduc while the Nor’Westers are 2-0.
In round one, SARFC finished 2-3 and the Nor’Westers were 3-1-1 and the score between the teams was 48-5 for the Nor’Westers on May 15 at SARFC.
Results in round one determined the division two teams, as well as the ERU division one table that also includes round one Alberta premier league teams.
NCABL games
The playoff race heats up this week for the senior AA St. Albert Cardinals in the North Central Alberta Baseball League.
The fifth-place Cardinals are chasing the Westlock Red Lions (10-8-1), Edmonton Blackhawks (11-7), last year’s NCABL champions, and Edmonton Primeaus (11-5-1) for a semifinal berth behind the first-place Sherwood Park Athletics (14-3).
The best-of-three semifinals start after league play ends Aug. 8.
The Cardinals have missed the playoffs every year since joining the NCABL in 2013.
Last year’s Cardinals finished fifth at 11-10 as the 5-4 loss to Westlock in St. Albert in the second-last game of the season determined the final playoff spot.
Tuesday the Cardinals (8-6-1) hosted the Primeaus and the score was unavailable at press time.
Tonight the Cardinals are in Stony Plain to play the Mets (7-9) at 7:15 p.m. and Thursday’s game against the Parkland Twins (2-15) is slated for Legion Memorial Park with the start time to be determined.
The third win a row for the Cardinals was 12-7 against the Twins in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader in St. Albert. Game two was rained out and rescheduled for Thursday.
The latest Cardinals’ stats dated July 21 listed Hayden Chies (.310 average) and Jake Enright (.317 average) as co-leaders in hits with 13 and RBIs with nine.
Brendan Larsen led the Cardinals with 30.33 innings pitched and 3.00 ERA while going 4-2 with two complete games.
Tigers baseball
The St. Albert Tigers wrap up the Sunburst Baseball League regular season tonight in Sherwood Park.
First pitch is 6:30 p.m. against the defending senior AAA provincial champion Athletics at Centennial Park.
The Tigers (1-9) are a distant fourth behind the Red Deer Riggers (10-6), Confederation Park Cubs (10-6) and Athletics (8-8) in the Sunburst standings.
Last weekend the Tigers finished 1-2 at the 39th annual Red Deer Riggers Tournament with a 4-2 win against the Calgary Dinos and losses of 4-1 to the Riggers and 10-0 to the Athletics, who beat the Riggers 14-0 in the final.
