Rugby match

Today’s must-win match for the premier women’s team kicks off at noon at St. Albert Rugby Football Club.

A victory over the Pirates to close out the Alberta premier league’s round two fixtures would put SARFC into the playoff mix.

The top four finishers, including the highest-ranked north and south teams, qualify for the Aug. 10 semifinals.

As of Wednesday, SARFC (3-3, five bonus points and 17 points overall) was below the playoff cutline in the eight-team table behind the Lep/Tigers (6-0, four BP, 28 PTS), Pirates (5-1, five BP, 25 PTS), Red Deer Titans (4-3, six BP, 22 PTS) and Calgary Hornets (4-3, four BP, 20 PTS).

Leading up to the Pirates, SARFC suffered losses of 44-21 at the Lep/Tigers and 49-34 against the Titans in Red Deer and last weekend was awarded a 20-0 forfeit win worth five points against the Calgary Irish (0-6).

SARFC's combined round one and two 6-4 record includes the May 2 season-opening 29-22 loss to the Pirates that was decided late in the match.

Last year SARFC finished 4-5-1 in premier as semifinalists.

11U provincials

The Baseball Alberta 11U AA Tier VIII provincials are underway at Legion Memorial Park.

The host St. Albert Cardinals White has games scheduled today at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. after Friday’s tournament opener.

Depending on round robin results, the final will be played Sunday afternoon.

The four-team draw consists of the Cardinals (5-11-1), Coronation Royals (5-7), Strathmore Reds 2 (1-17) and Cold Lake Cardinals (0-15) of the Tier VIII division in the Baseball Alberta league.

Sprint triathlon

The online registration deadline for the 30th annual St. Albert Triathlon is Aug. 7 at midnight.

Go online to zone4.ca to enter the sprint distance (750-metre swim, 20-kilometre bike and five-km run), try-a-tri (250m swim, 10-km bike and 2.5-km run) or sprint team relay.

As of Wednesday, 184 spots remained for the Aug. 11 competition at Fountain Park Recreation Centre.

The triathlon includes qualifying spots for the 2020 ITU World Championships in Edmonton.

Last year’s triathlon featured 119 finishers in the sprint distance, 21 newbies in the tri-a-try and five sprint teams.

The triathlon is hosted by St. Albert Road Runners and Triathlon Club and is sanctioned by the Alberta Triathlon Association.
