The annual St. Albert Centre Ladies Bonspiel is underway at the St. Albert Curling Club.
The 20-rink draw ends Sunday with the finals starting at 1:30 p.m.
This year’s theme is That ’70s Show.
Last year’s competition featured 24 rinks and the final was decided on a measurement in the eighth and last end as Lauren Jenkyns of St. Albert counted two with the hammer to edge Carla Graham of Fort Saskatchewan 6-5.
The annual Sweetheart Meet hosted by the Dynamyx Gymnastics Club of St. Albert flips into action today at 8:30 a.m.
It’s the first of seven sessions during the two-day competition at the Chisholm Avenue facility.
Approximately 243 provincial level one to four gymnasts in the six to 16 age-range are representing 17 clubs from across north central Alberta.
It’s among a series of meets in northern Alberta to prepare athletes for the Northern Regional Provincials, March 13 to 15 at Grande Prairie, for qualification at the Alberta Gymnastics Federation championships in April at Lethbridge.
The final session is 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
This weekend marks the last homestand of the season for the St. Albert Flyers in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.
Tonight the midget 15 Flyers (24-5-5) skate against the Lloydminster Rage (12-11-10) at 8 p.m. and Sunday’s contest against the Camrose Red Wings (14-13-5) begins at 5 p.m.
The Flyers are 15-0-2 at Akinsdale Arena.
In the north division the Flyers trail the first-place SSAC Bulldogs (28-3-2) by five points and the Bulldogs have a game in hand.
The Flyers are coming off a 6-1 loss to the Maple Leafs (15-13-6) last weekend at Kenilworth Arena. The Maple Leafs racked up five power-play goals against the penalty-riddled Flyers.
After this weekend the Flyers have one game remaining before the Sutter North Cup starts March 5 in Edmonton. It’s a qualification tournament for provincials in Leduc.
Monday the Paul Kane Blues and the Spruce Grove Panthers lock horns in metro Edmonton division one women’s basketball.
Tipoff is 5 p.m. at Paul Kane High School.
It’s the last home game for the Blues before the playoffs start March 2.
The Panthers, the defending division one champions, are tied for first at 10-1 and the Blues are third at 8-2.
The 4A provincial high school rankings list the Panthers at No. 1 and the Blues at No. 7.
