The Paul Kane Blues host a metro Edmonton division one doubleheader today in high school hoops.
Tip-off is 5 p.m. between the Blues (3-4) and McNally Tigers (1-6) in the men’s division and at 6:30 p.m. the lady Blues (4-1) play the O’Leary Spartans (0-6).
Last weekend, the lady Blues finished third at the Rose Tournament hosted by the Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs of Calgary.
Tournament all-star Sydney Hurlburt scored 20 points and player of the game Serena Lillo sank 10 while leading the Blues defensively in the 68-66 victory over William Aberhart Orange of Calgary in the third-place game.
In the 4A rankings, the Orange are No. 6 and Blues (11-6 overall) are an honourable mention.
The Blues opened the tournament with a 71-68 win over the Centennial Coyotes of Calgary. Page Derworiz was the player of the game with 10 points in the last quarter against Centennial, a 4A honourable mention.
The semifinal between the Blues and Vincent Massey Trojans of Winnipeg was decided in overtime, as the No. 2-ranked 4A team in Manitoba prevailed 84-81. Player of the game Jenell Desharnais tossed in 20 points.
Friday’s lid-lifter at the fourth annual Stadnyk Frozen Ring starts at 7:45 a.m. at Flagstone rink between the St. Albert Huskies and St. Albert Fire Rings in U10 Step 2.
The 19-team tournament, hosted by the St. Albert Ringette Association, features 27 outdoor games and 11 games are scheduled for the Akinsdale, Kinex, Mark Messier and Troy Murray arenas. Every team will play once indoors.
Sunday’s finals will be staged outdoors at Flagstone for U10 Step 2 and Step 3 and Alpine for U12 A and C.
The Central Social Hall 3-on-3 Pond Hockey Championships, presented by the Canadian Progress Club, will be played Saturday on the Peace Hills Insurance Pond at Lacombe Lake Park.
The A and B finals in the 48-team tournament are 3:40 p.m. and 4 p.m. and the CPC Cup will be presented to the A playoff winner.
The fifth annual event starts at 9 a.m. and features a beer gardens, music, bonfire, outdoor cafeteria and horse and sleigh rides. All ages are welcomed.
Funds raised will be donated to various charities.
There is no parking at the venue but a complimentary park and ride from the St. Albert Centre bus terminal features round trips between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
