St. Albert was well represented at the Senior Bowl as five players joined the North squad to down the South 23-15.

Grade 12 students Landon Wenger (linebacker) and Andre Leduc (defensive back) of the St. Albert Skyhawks joined Paul Kane Blues defensive ends Brandon Jennings and Nathan Mitchell, and Blues’ kicker Ideen Samadi for the 23rd Annual Football Alberta Senior Bowl High School Football All-Star Game.

After a series of punts in the first quarter, the North struck first on a 15-yard touchdown pass with 1:27 left in quarter. Samadi then stepped into the game and booted a 24-yard field goal at the beginning of the second quarter to put the North up 10-0.

The south scored a late touchdown in the first half after an interception and unnecessary roughness penalty put them on the North’s one-yard-line. But Samadi responded by kicking a 37-yard field goal for a 13-7 lead at the half.

The North would go on to concede a safety after adding a touchdown for a 20-9 lead. While the South added one more unconverted touchdown to draw within five, Samadi saved his longest kick of the game for the end — a 40-yarder — to ice the victory at 23-15 with 1:33 left in the game.

Each team has now won 11 times in the game’s history with one game ending in a tie.
