Royals playoffs
The Rural & Edmonton Midget 15AA Hockey League playoffs continue tonight for the St. Albert Royals.
Faceoff is 8:15 p.m. against SSAC Dolce Vita Homes at Castledowns Arena.
Game three in the best-of-five semifinal is 8 p.m. Thursday at Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre.
The Royals won Saturday’s series opener 6-3 at Akinsdale Arena.
A pair by Nico Gallo and singles by affiliate Declan Dika and Owen Bourque on the power play in the second period made it 4-2. Kaelan Shelton and Lucas Sadownyk’s empty netter closed it out in the third.
Bourque added two assists as the league’s leading playoff scorer with 11 points.
Shots were 46-34 for the Royals as Ethan Weir (2-0, 3.00 GAA) backstopped the Royals to their fourth playoff win after going 3-0 in the blue round robin pool.
If needed, game four is 8 p.m. Saturday at Akinsdale Arena and game five is 8:15 p.m. Monday at Go Auto Arena.
In league play, the Royals (23-3-4) placed second and SSAC (16-8-6) was fourth.
The winner plays the first-place Hockey Central Panthers (24-1-5) or seventh-place Red Deer Chiefs (14-14-2) in the best-of-five final.
Last year the Panthers swept the Royals for the championship.
Sharks playoffs
The midget elite St. Albert Sharks host the Edmonton Pandas or Lloydminster Steelers this weekend in the best-of-three north division provincial qualifier in the Alberta Female Hockey League.
Game one is 8 p.m. Friday and game two is 7:45 p.m. Saturday at Go Auto Arena.
Game three, if needed, is 8 p.m. Sunday at Mark Messier Arena.
The winner advances to the March 28 to 31 provincials in Grande Prairie.
The Sharks (17-9) finished first in the north for a first-round bye and the team’s last game before the playoffs was Feb. 10.
Last year’s provincial finalists ended the regular season with three straight wins while going 8-4 in 2019.
