Mission results at Ice Breaker tournament

Silver is the medal colour for the St. Albert Mission in the last two U14AA tournament finals after losses to the Red and Blue of Calgary. The St. Albert tweens dropped a 6-4 decision to Calgary Red on Sunday at the Central Alberta AA Ice Breaker in Lacombe and the previous setback was 5-2 against Calgary Blue at the 32nd annual Wood Tournament last month at Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre. The fourth tournament of the season and third final for the Mission ended with the Red breaking a 4-4 deadlock with 6:17 to play and the insurance marker was scored 52 seconds later. Kenzie McEachern's second goal and fourth point of the match tied it at four with 8:53 remaining. The Mission trailed 2-1 after the first period and 4-1 with 17:28 left in the last period. Jazmyn Fevin and Jamie Grimshaw notched one goal and two assists apiece. The Mission finished 3-1 and the Red was 2-1-1 in the eight-team draw. In pool play, the Mission posted wins of 22-3 against the Central Alberta Sting, 8-0 against the Saskatoon Saints and 8-1 against Zone 5. The winners of the Bernadette Price Memorial Tournament in Saskatoon are gearing up for the U14AA provincials in February at Edmonton and westerns in March at Saskatoon. The Mission’s overall record was unavailable at press time. Seven players are back from the fifth-place Mission team at the 2017 westerns in Winnipeg.

U16AA Mission

The St. Albert Mission U16AA juniors finished 1-3 at the Ice Breaker in Lacombe after Sunday’s shootout loss to Zone 2. Jamie Stolk’s goal knotted the count at four with 8:30 left in the last period and Zone 2 struck twice in the shootout. Gen Pallot potted a pair and Reeve Spanakis also scored in regulation time. The Mission opened pool play with the 8-3 loss to the Sting, followed by the 4-3 win against Sherwood Park Power and 5-3 loss to Calgary Shock, the eventual champion of the eight-team tournament. It was 3-1 Power after the first period when the Mission rallied on Leah McIntosh’s second of the game and singles by Ali Sharun and Spanakis. The Mission are 6-22-1 after their fifth tournament of the season. On tap is the Esso Gold Ring next month in Calgary. The U16AA provincials are in February at Edmonton and nationals are in April at Winnipeg. The Mission roster consists of four returnees from the 15th place finishers at the 2017 nationals in Leduc.

U19AA Mission

The St. Albert Mission U19AA belles won two and lost two at the Ice Breaker in Lacombe. Scores were 4-1 over Calgary Heat and the 6-4 loss to the Sting in pool play in the six-team draw. In the crossover playoffs, the Mission lost 6-2 to the Edmonton Elite and defeated the Heat 5-2 for fifth place. The Elite won the tournament final. Mykenzie Howard netted two goals, Grace Haney, Lauren Millar and Abby Klatt also scored and Vail Ketsa had two assists in the last game against the Heat. The U19AA provincials are hosted by Edmonton in February and nationals are in Winnipeg in April. The Mission’s overall record was unavailable at press time. The Mission have eight players in the lineup from the fourth-place team at the 2017 nationals in Leduc.
