Presidents’ Cup

The St. Albert Miners are playing for medals at the Presidents’ Cup senior B lacrosse nationals in Nanaimo, B.C.

Results from today’s semifinals will determine the pairings in the gold/silver and bronze playoff games Sunday.

The Miners, winners of the last two Presidents’ Cups, and the Caughnawaga Indians of the Three Nations league shared first place in the eight-team round robin with one game remaining.

Friday’s score between the Miners and Ladner Pioneers of the West Coast league was unavailable at press time.

The Oakville Titans (4-1-1) and the host Nanaimo Timbermen (4-2) were also in the playoff mix.

The first loss for the Miners after four wins was 10-7 against Caughnawaga on Wednesday.

Caughnawaga dropped an 8-7 decision to the Capital Region Axemen (2-3-1) of Quebec on Thursday.

The Miners never held the lead against Caughnawaga while trailing 2-0 after the first period and 6-3 entering the third.

Keegan Bal, the tournament’s leading scorer after games played Thursday with 31 points, tied it at two at 6:15 of the middle frame.

Mike Triolo led the Miners with three goals and two assists, Graedon Cornfield potted a pair and Richard Lachlin also scored.

Shots were 43-37 for Caughnawaga and Aaron Bold was in net for the Miners.

The Rocky Mountain league provincial champions rebounded Thursday by doubling the Onondaga Redhawks (1-5) of the Can-Am league 10-5.

Lachlan’s hat trick, two goals by Bal and singles from Josh Sullivan, John Lintz, Patrick O’Meara, Cornfield and captain Jordan Cornfield did the damage offensively.

The Miners outshot Onondaga 61-31 in support of Bold (5-1, 6.24 GAA).

The top-10 scorers at nationals before Friday’s games included Bal’s tournament-high 20 assists; Lachlan had 14 goals and 25 points, and Triolo with 10 goals and 20 points.

The victory against Onondaga raised the Miners’ overall record to 84-4-2 after losing the 2015 provincial final.

The only senior B teams to three-peat at the President’s Cup are 1976-78 Vernon Tigers and 1986-88 Fergus (Ont.) Thistles.

Jiu-jitsu medallists

Members of the Hayabusa Training Centre Ltd. in Campbell Business Park were awarded medals at the IBJJF World Masters last week in Las Vegas.

The jiu-jitsu podium finishers were Nancy Ma, a purple-belt silver medallist, Chris Edworthy, a blue-belt silver medallist, and Luke Harris, silver medallist in the open class and black-belt bronze medallist in the super-heavyweight class.

The semifinal super-heavyweight match for Harris was the loss to Travis Lutter, who fought Anderson Silva for the UFC middleweight belt in 2007.
