Miners at Presidents' Cup, rugby match at SARFC and Sturgeon Valley hosts Edmonton men's amateur

The first of seven round-robin games in Nanaimo is against the Saskatoon Brewers.

The Miners also play Monday against the Capital Region Axemen (Quebec), Tuesday against the Oakville Titans and Nanaimo Timbermen, Wednesday against the Caughnawaga Indians (Three Nations), Thursday against the Onondaga Redhawks (Can-Am) and Friday against the Ladner Pioneers.

Saturday’s playoffs determine Sunday’s medal finals.

The only senior B teams to win three Presidents’ Cups in a row are the 1976-78 Vernon Tigers and 1986-88 Fergus (Ont.) Thistles.

The Miners are 22-1-1 this season and 79-3-2 overall after losing the 2015 Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League provincial final.

Last year’s Miners finished 8-1 at the Presidents’ Cup at Six Nations of the Grand River in Ontario as the first Alberta team to repeat at nationals and the first back-to-back winner since the 2011-12 St. Regis Braves of the Three Nations Senior Lacrosse League.

The 2016 Presidents’ Cup victory in Leduc by the 5-0 Miners also marked the first national championship by an Alberta team since the 2007 Sherwood Park Outlaws.

Rugby match

Division two men’s rugby scrums are down at the St. Albert Rugby Football Club today at 4 p.m.

SARFC (2-8, 218 PF/375 PA) hosts the Parkland Sharks (3-6-1, 334 PF/399 PA) in the second-last match of the season for both teams in the Edmonton Rugby Union.

The last match for SARFC was the 55-21 road loss to the Fort McMurray Knights (6-5, 388 PF/401 PA).

Golf tournament

The Edmonton Golf Association men’s and senior men’s amateur championship swings into action Sunday and Monday at Sturgeon Valley Golf & Country Club.

Start times are 1:22 p.m. through 3:54 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. Tuesday (shotgun start).

Among the 80 competitors is last year’s winner, Ryan DenBraber of Sturgeon Valley, who finished tied for second at his home club’s championship tournament earlier this month. Shane O’Neill, the 2018 Sturgeon Valley champion for the fourth time in 10 years, and Dean Misner, the fourth-place finisher in the club tournament, are also entered, as well as the Sturgeon County father and son duo of John and Tyler Saunders of the Glendale Golf & County Club.
