The eight-team round robin continues for the Miners with games today against the Caughnawaga Indians (2-0) of the Three Nations league, Thursday against the Onondaga Redhawks (1-2) of the Can-Am league and Friday against the Ladner Pioneers (1-1) of the West Coast league.

The Miners opened the tournament in Sunday’s lopsided 17-4 win against the Saskatoon Brewers (0-3).

Period scores were 9-3 and 13-3 for the Rocky Mountain league provincial champions.

Darren Kinnear was the top point producer with seven, Mike Triolo and captain Jordan Cornfield scored a game-high three goals apiece and Richard Lachlan added six assists.

Shots were 40-33 for the Miners as Aaron Bold (31 saves, three GA in 45 minutes) and Matty Hiebert (two saves, one GA) shared netminding duties.

Monday’s 7-5 decision over the Capital Region Axemen (0-2) of Quebec was highlighted by four unanswered goals in the middle frame, as Lachlan and Keegan Bal potted a pair each, to make it 5-2 after 40 minutes.

Bal finished the win with three goals and one assist.

Triolo and Nik Farris also notched singles.

Bold made 37 saves as the Miners tested the Axmen with 41 shots.

The win raised the Miners’ overall record to 81-3-2 after losing the 2015 provincial final.

The Miners are striving to join the 1976-78 Vernon Tigers and 1986-88 Fergus (Ont.) Thistles as the only senior B teams to celebrate three Presidents’ Cups in a row.

Saunders wins

Tyler Saunders shot identical rounds of 69 to win the Edmonton Golf Association men’s amateur at Sturgeon Valley Golf & Country Club.
