Storm football
Midget spring league football kicks off today for the St. Albert Storm in Lacombe.
The Storm huddles up against the Fort McMurray Ravens at 2 p.m.
The next game is April 6 against the Edmonton Seahawks at 12 noon at Clarke Stadium.
The midget spring league is operated by the Capital District Minor Football Association and student athletes in Grade 9, 10 and 11 are eligible to play.
The league is comprised of seven teams and the Storm plays five games plus one playoff match May 11.
Last year the Storm finished 5-1 (178 PF/86 PA).
U18 nationals
The third annual Curling Canada Optimist U18 nationals starts Tuesday for St. Albert skips Nathan Molberg and Julia Bakos at Glen Allan Recreation Complex in Sherwood Park.
The Curling Alberta U18 championship rink of Molberg, third Ben Helston, second Nick Warkman, lead Morgan Bilassy and coach Nicole Bellamy slides into action at 2 p.m. against Joel Krats of Newfoundland and Labrador in the men’s pool B draw.
Bakos, third Quinn Prodaniuk, second Kim Bonneau, lead Julianna MacKenzie and coach Blair Lenton face Cally Moore of Nova Scotia at 6 p.m. in the women’s pool A draw.
The Crestwood foursome and Cortland Sonnenberg of Sexsmith/Grande Prairie are the host teams at nationals as the second-place finishers at U18 provincials.
Jessica Wytrychowski of Airdrie is Team Alberta as the provincial women’s champion.
Nationals consist of 14 men’s and women’s teams and the top four from each pool in the two divisions will play in a double knockout for qualification in the medal round. The finals are 1 p.m. April 7.
Nova Scotia swept the 2018 men’s and women’s finals.

Junior curling
The Alberta Junior Curling Tour hosts its Players Championship this weekend at St. Albert Curling Club.
The bonspiel features the top-ranked U21 and U18 men’s and women’s teams on the provincial junior circuit.
The six-team women’s draw includes skip Selena Sturmay, third Abby Marks of St. Albert, second Kate Goodhelpsen and lead Paige Papley as the Curling Canada U21 champions and world silver medallists.
The lineup of University of Alberta Pandas is the No. 1 U21 women’s rink at the Players Championship.
The Nic Oake foursome of St. Albert, with third Chase Lozinsky, second Carter Parenteau and lead Owen Pacholok, are competing in the eight-team men’s draw as the No. 1 U18 rink.
