Midget AAA Tier I, peewee AA Tier III, bantam AAA and AA Tier I provincials

The Cardinals are hosting the Baseball Alberta Tier I championship this weekend at Legion Memorial Park after posting a league-best 16 wins in the provincial round and tied Calgary Dino's Black for the overall lead in wins with 30 apiece.

Midget AAA Tier I

The St. Albert Red Cardinals are hosting the Baseball Alberta midget AAA Tier I championship for the second year in a row.

The eight-team tournament at Legion Memorial started Friday with four games scheduled, including the Cardinals against the Sherwood Park Athletics in pool A. The score was unavailable at press time.

Today, the Cardinals play Okotoks Dawgs U16 at 12:15 p.m. and the Red Deer Braves at 6:15 p.m.

Okotoks qualified for provincials as last weekend’s Tier II champion.

The pool B teams are Calgary Dinos Black, Fort McMurray Oil Giants, Northern Lights of Grande Prairie and Parkland Twins, last year’s provincial winner.

If there are no tiebreakers Sunday, the semifinals are at 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. and the final is at 3 p.m.

Fort McMurray is hosting the U18 Baseball Canada championship and will be joined by another Alberta team at the Aug. 16 to 19 tournament.

The Cardinals, last year’s provincial semifinalists at 2-2, finished the Norwest season as the top team in the provincial round at 16-4 and the regular season at 25-5. The team’s overall record is 36-14.

Calgary ranked second (15-8 and 25-10) and Fort McMurray was third (14-9 and 23-14).

Peewee AA Tier III

The St. Albert Blue Cardinals are rounding the bases at the Baseball Alberta peewee AA Tier III tournament at Legion Memorial Park.

The five-team round robin starts Friday for the Cardinals against the Edmonton Padres and Clive Red Sox. Scores were unavailable at press time.

Today, the Cardinals play the Red Deer Braves at 3 p.m. and Sunday’s game against Camrose Cougars Royals is 12 p.m.

Barring any tiebreakers, the top two teams advance to Sunday’s final at 2 p.m.

Bantam provincials

It’s the provincial weekend for the bantam St. Albert Cardinals.

The bantam AAA Tier I Cardinals are competing in Okokotks and the bantam AA Tier I Red Cardinals are up to bat in Grande Prairie. Both draws are comprised of eight teams apiece.

The Cardinals, last year’s bantam AAA Tier I finalists, finished 15-11 in the provincial round and 22-14 overall in the Baseball Alberta league.

The bantam AA league record for the Red Cardinals is 12-5-2.
