Midget AAA Raiders host Larry Mitchell Cup and St. Albert teams at provincial men’s, women’s soccer championships

Larry Mitchell Cup

The Larry Mitchell Cup will be awarded to the winning team in Sunday’s midget AAA intersquad game hosted by the St. Albert Nektar Data Systems Raiders.

Faceoff is at 2 p.m. between Team Blue and Team White at Akinsdale Arena.

The lineups will be posted at www.raidershockey.ca after six one-hour scrimmages wrap up today involving the Haugan, Hunter, Iginla, Joseph, Lukan and Wack teams. The mini games start at 10 a.m. and the last one goes at 5:30 p.m.

The Larry Mitchell Cup is named after St. Albert’s hockey historian and former longtime Gazette sports writer.

The first exhibition for the Raiders is Sept. 10 against the KC Pats at 5:30 p.m. at Bill Hunter Arena.

The regular-season home-opener for the Raiders in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League is Sept. 29 against the Leduc Oil Kings at 8 p.m. and the pre-game ceremony will honour the St. Albert Raiders Hockey Club alumni killed in the Humboldt Broncos' bus crash April 6.

Soccer provincials

The Alberta Soccer Association Tier 3 men’s and women’s championships are underway at ESA Complex for three St. Albert teams.

The Impact Alumni and Forest Park Rangers are the St. Albert Men’s Soccer League reps and the scores from Friday’s tournament opener between the Impact and Lakeland in pool one and Forest Park against Miyagis FC in pool two were unavailable at press time.

The Impact line up today against WHU Aliens at 12:15 p.m. and Sunday against Calisia at 2 p.m.

Forest Park plays Nations FC today at 2:30 p.m. and Northside United at 12 p.m. Sunday.

The medal finals are at 12:15 p.m. on Monday.

The five-team round robin for Mavericks 09 of the St. Albert Women’s Soccer League kicks off today with matches at 10:15 a.m. against the Sherwood Park Phoenix Reserves and 3:15 p.m. against Tigers FC.

Sunday’s start times for the 2017 Tier 3 bronze medallists are 10 a.m. against Wind SH and 3 p.m. against Rangers Royals.

Meanwhile, the St. Albert Impact 1 (Spaidal) and St. Albert Impact 4 (Murphy) women’s teams in the Edmonton District Soccer Association are competing at provincials in Calgary this weekend.

Impact 1 is in premier and Impact 4 is in Tier 1 and both tournaments consist of four teams apiece.
