Midget AA games for Blues and Crusaders, Slash Alumni Event and John Reid Memorial Scholarship details

Midget AA games

St. Albert’s midget AA teams play their last games before the Christmas break today in the Northern Alberta Hockey League. The Blues (10-2-2) face-off against SSAC Don Wheaton (6-10-1) at 5:15 p.m. at Confederation Arena and the Source for Sports Crusaders (10-5-2) host the Leduc Roughnecks (8-8-2) at 8:30 p.m. at Mark Messier Arena. The Blues are third in the Anderson division and the team’s third win in a row was 5-2 Sunday against the Crusaders on Raiders day in St. Albert. Keigan Miller leads the Blues in scoring with 13 goals and 19 points and Brandon Pelletier is second with 10 goals and 16 points. The Crusaders are second in the Besa division after the second loss in three games for the 2017 playoff finalists. Ryan Deets and Logan McKinley are the top point producers on the Crusaders with 22 apiece. Deets also leads the team in goals with 13 and McKinley has 10. Shane Zilka of the Crusaders is the league leader in shutouts with four.

Slash celebration

The fourth annual reunion of past and present midget AAA St. Albert Ron Hodgson Slash players, sponsored by the 2011 Esso Cup Legacy Fund, will be staged Wednesday at Troy Murray Arena. The Slash Alumni Event starts at 7 p.m. The first season for the Slash was 2004/05 in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League and this is the team’s second season in the Alberta Female Hockey League. The 2017 Esso Cup national champions were 13-5 before Friday’s home game against the Red Deer Chiefs. The score was unavailable at press time.

Reid scholarship

The application deadline for the John Reid Memorial Scholarship is Jan. 6. Individuals who played bantam AAA for the St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres after the 2004/05 season and played hockey in St. Albert for a minimum of three years are eligible to apply for the $1,000 scholarship. The successful applicant will be announced Jan. 18 at 7:15 p.m. during the opening ceremonies of the John Reid Memorial Tournament at Go Auto Arena. Previous winners were Justin Kueber, Joshua Maeda, Steven Woolger, Brady McCorriston, Ryan Harrison, Liam Liston, Steven Canduro, Brady Reid, Brad Holmes and Tyler Dea. The Reid scholarship was established by the parent group of the 2004/05 Sabres. Donations to the scholarship fund are being accepted by the John Reid Memorial Tournament Society.
