Metro all-stars
The Metro Athletics All-Stars in volleyball and football have been finalized.The top five athletes in their respective metro Edmonton league divisions were selected and the local all-stars are Erika Kruk of the Bellerose Bulldogs in women’s volleyball, Chase Gratton of the St. Albert Skyhawks, Colin Green of the Sturgeon Spirits and Dan Ward of the Bulldogs in men’s volleyball and Connor Guy of the Paul Kane Blues and Quade Kozak of the Bulldogs in football.
Kozak was also the division one Carr conference MVP and a Metro Athletics All-Edmonton division one selection.
SAPEC basketball
The Richard S. Fowler Falcons is the team to beat in the St. Albert Physical Education Council junior high basketball league after week five in the regular season.The Fowler boys are 6-0 and the lady Falcons, last year’s Tier I city champions, are 5-0.
League play wraps up Feb. 22 and the playoffs tip-off Feb. 27.
The SAPEC Tier I city finals are March 8 at the SkyDome.
The Lorne Akins Gators are the defending boys’ champions.
Meanwhile, the Lady Falcons won the Fowler Classic last weekend for the third straight year and in the final defeated the Vincent J. Maloney Marauders, ranked second in the SAPEC standings at 4-1.
The Falcons also knocked off VJM in last month’s Boston Pizza SAPEC Invitational A division final. VJM is the 2017 city finalist.
The Fowler boys placed third in their home tournament and in the final Louis St. Laurent beat Esther Starkman of Edmonton.
Team Canada Cheer
The junior national co-ed advanced team representing Canada at the ICU World Junior Championships is Perfect Storm Athletics and the following five local athletes are the cheer team: Shailynn Rockey and Eden Ashcroft, a pair of Grade 10 Bellerose students, Andrew Thomson, a Grade 10 Paul Kane student, Madelyn Radchenko, a Grade 9 William D. Cuts student and Kennedi Knight, a Grade 8 Georges H. Primeau student in Morinville.They are joined by nine athletes from Calgary.
The selection process started with teams from across the country submitting a skills video and were adjudicated by a national panel of coaches, judges, gym owners and provincial federation members to determine the final round of five and those teams were asked to showcase their routines, performed without breaks or cuts, on a non-sprung mat.
Junior worlds are April 25 to 27 in Orlando, Florida.
