Tonight’s memorial game in Fort Saskatchewan will honour the memory of St. Albert lacrosse player Darian Mar.
The senior B match between the St. Albert Miners, last year’s Presidents’ Cup national champions, and Edmonton Warriors in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League starts at 8 p.m. at the Jubilee Recreation Centre.
Admission is $5. Minor lacrosse players wearing their jerseys, as well as youths 12 and under, get in free.
MAR77 stickers will be available for purchase by donation.
Proceeds from the sticker sales, admission and 50/50 draw will go to the Mar family and the Wizards, a bantam A zone team based out of North Edmonton and St. Albert, the 13-year-old Mar played for.
The Wizards will observe a moment of silence before every game and will keep Mar’s No. 77 jersey on the bench for the rest of the season.
A gofundme page was set up through the initiative of Mar’s teammates and the link is https://www.gofundme.com/in-memory-of-77-darian-mar.
As of Friday morning, $30,495 was raised by 353 people in four days.
Fundraising efforts will assist the Mar family with funeral costs and support for the Wizards players.
Visit #MAR77 for fundraising updates.
A celebration of Mar’s life will take place today at 10 a.m. at Christcity Church, 14788-156 Street NW in Edmonton.
The family encourages everyone to wear colourful, casual and comfortable attire.
Last Thursday, Mar was riding his bicycle home from Sir George Simpson School when he collided with an Econoline van near Gresham Boulevard and Grenfell Avenue.
Mar, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, was transported to a hospital but that afternoon died of his injuries.
No charges are pending and drugs, alcohol and road conditions have been ruled out as factors in the collision.
St. Albert RCMP and the RCMP collision analyst are working on a final report which could take a month to complete.
Mar is remembered for his love of lacrosse as a hard-working and determined player with an infectious smile, great sense of humour and huge heart.
